Why did you measure the road?
Is it something you normally do, do you keep a tape in the car, and do you stop and measure it?

Erm... What are you talking about speeding drivers for? I was talking about driving at the speed limits and the danger posed by those who drive too slowly and cause other drivers to lose their patience (see the dog analogy).
I mean for example, if a HGV overtakes you (not YOU), followed by a learner driver and then a procession of other drivers all leaning on their horns..... Your doing something wrong. This surely cannot be denied??

I thought you mentioned 90 mph, where is that the speed limit?

I was talking about driving at an appropriate speed, at or close to 30 mph which is the limit on the stretch of road I am talking about. I have seen drivers doing double that, close to a blind bend and very close to serious collision when an innocent driver comes round the blind bend. I don't believe I am at fault for driving within the speed limit, the people who believe they can see round corners and don't need to take notice of speed limits are a danger to themselves and others and as someone who uses that road twice a day, going to work and returning home, I just wish I didn't have to worry about meeting someone on the wrong side of the road at double the speed limit.

The car coming towards him looked around 1m inside the wide line to me and still had a decent gap to the curb.Room enough there for strider to give a good gap passing the bike.Personally I'd have just eased off the throttle when straightening out of the bend and the other car would have been passed before getting to the bike but I don't think he's done anything wrong here really.

Slowing too much for the bike rather than passing it could have ended up with him not having the speed to get past it before any other vehicles coming the other way into what looks like the brow of a hill or the start of a bend(hard to tell exactly form that footage).Bike-car congas aren't something I'd like to be in as a cyclist.Better to keep it all smooth and flowing than stop start.

Have driven back from the coast today and had a couple of simialr situations.Nice wide country road with a cyclist in front of me, car coming the other way but plenty of room to get past without a change of speed.Car behind followed me but the Merc Sprinter behind him chose to slow down to a crawl, tailgate then sharply overtake and cut back in again.Personally I'd rather be overtaken how I did it than the van.

There is very easy and simple solution to that, I wonder if anyone can think of it.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

What part of this did you not read?

Google Earth's ruler is not as accurate as you may like to think. That said, four car widths is the minimum needed in order pass safely in such situations, that would be so at far slower speeds. What would you have done if the cyclist had hit a pot hole, or the other car did not move over enough?

Everyone has to move over for Strider.
He can even quote you a section of the Highway code if you ask him.

I drive AT the speed limit for every road I use.... it's very rare I find anyone who wishes to overtake when im driving at the speed limit.

    .

I think you will find that is the blue signs your getting confused with.

The other ones with a bit of red (danger) round them are maximum speeds.

People don't try and overtake because it would be dangerous and they probably can't get close.:p

Yes there is, but not everyone has the patience to wait as would be evident if you'd quoted my previous post where I said I'd have eased off myself.Better to have these people in front of you than behind.

It's me! Do people always speculate on here? It's all sorted now, but I am still a little shocked that DVLA is so unreasonable: one missed appointment that they knew about in advance and there is no second chance. It could have been necessary to cancel that appointment for any number of reasons. It normally takes around 2 weeks to make an appointment with the GP.

DVLA staff were very helpful and sympathetic in the end. I assume the know that there is a problem with their system, for one thing a patient has no control over how long it will take the GP to complete the paperwork.

What really annoyed me was that last week a friend mentioned that her husband who has a serious health problem is still driving - he drives all day at work. He has some kind of problem with his brain, that is still being investigated, and is having the most ghastly attacks. Her exact words to me were: "had he been driving when he had the [latest] attack he would surely have been killed"! I asked her why he was driving and she claimed that the specialist had told him it was safe to drive. The truth is that he has not told the GP / specialist / employers how bad the attacks are in case he loses his licence and job.

Where can I post this to warn people about this potential problem?
