The point i'm trying to make is that often developers make smartphone apps for the Apple store first (i'm talking about useful apps here), apps for the Android platform are given a lower priority...often they come out months/years later (if ever).

You are talking nonsense with an extremely biased view .

There me go thinking all Apple apps are games or toys .

AS Android has until the last twelve months been relatively low key in sales then its to be expected that Iphone had a much bigger market for apps and developers developed for them many not even knowing what Android was . But as the Android sales have rocketed they no longer ignore the market .

But it is the attitude of Apple users that stopped me buying the product in the first place and remains so today .

Have owned both an iPhone and a HTC Wildfire, so I can make a fairly good comparison.

I bought my Wildfire after my iPhone died a watery death, I wanted to stick with a smartphone but couldn't afford a new iPhone. In a way it worked out for the best. For a much cheaper cost (and granted, at a slightly slower speed) the Wildfire does nearly everything the iPhone does. It doesn't have the restrictions the iPhone does either. I'm almost given too much customization choice with the Wildfire! I found the Apple OS as buggy as Android though. Both can crash, both have sluggish periods and both have their own problems.

Additionally, I actually can't believe someone has said that an iPhone can work 'straight out of the box' - so what exactly do you have to do to get the Android working? Turn it on? Surely not. With the iPhone you have to faff about with the fancy SIM holder and then activate it via iTunes. What if you don't have iTunes? Ok, so you download it. But what if you don't have the Internet? It's simple to activate the iPhone, but not as simple as some make out.

Of course, I miss the difference in screen quality, but the moment my contract is up I'll be upgrading straight to the Desire or similar. I do like the iPhone, and if the price was right I may go back. But Android systems aren't as overpriced and they aren't as restricted as Apple. Tbh, the restrictions bloody annoy me. You MUST use iTunes and you MUST pay for ringtones etc. Yes, there are ways around this, but not everyone knows that and for those who struggle with technology it's not really an option. I like being able to connect my phone to any PC and search through the files in explorer without iTunes trying to change things or wipe my phone as well. I also like that if my battery goes I can get it replaced. I've been told by an Apple Store Genius that when the battery on the iPhone goes you need a new phone. I can upgrade the memory easily too.

There's so much concentration on how modern and revolutionary the iPhone is but as stated before, it's really not anything special. Facetime is only great if you use it, and my old Sony Ericsson had a front face camera for this. Copy & paste had to be included in an update AFTER other rivals had it long before they did. Like I've said, my Wildfire has many functions which are the same as the iPhone and it's much cheaper.

Well the likes of First Direct, Natwest, Barclaycard appear to be ignoring Android.

Well i'm not a Apple fanboi as such...i hate Macs, have never used an ipod, will never buy an ipad and i hate iTunes even more (i use ifunbox to install apps). I use an iphone 4 not because every tom/!!!!!!/harry has one but simply because i find iOS smooth and slick. I couldn't care less if iPhone was made by Bush or Alba...i bought it for the job it does, not for the status symbol.

I have no confidence in using any mobile for financial purposes thus far.... just sounds unsafe to me.... especially after having my only online fraud from itunes, I have even less fate in using iPhone for such things.....

Good that you bought iPhone because you felt that it suits you. Unfortunately, there are lots of people who bought them due to the wrong reasons.... especially youngster....

    Hi,

This is an informative, and funny thread!

I'm unashamedly a Mac nerd, and love my iMac..

At the moment, I'm without a mobile phone.

I did have an iPhone 3GS, and it was just the job.

As I've always had a mobile of some description since about 1998, two weeks without *any* phone is starting to give me withdrawal!

I'm missing the iPod functions / IMDB / TV Guide Apps / Web browsing of the iPhone as well.

    Can't afford a replacement 3GS / 4 though, so I'm looking at an Android.

Do any of you guys know if the Orange San Francisco is worth getting?

I've read quite a few cracking reviews online, and it seems a pretty well - specced phone /gadget for a competitive price.

My only reservation is that some posters online, have said that it's headphone output volume is dire when it comes to music! :-/

Looking forward to treating myself next weekend, when my Quidco cashback dosh comes through.

Quite excited about trying out Android for the first time, but then gadgets do tend to do things to me...

FYI - Barclays Group don't have iPhone or Android apps. They produce mobile specific versions of their online offerings. barclays.mobi and barclaycard.mobi. Can't really take your posts seriously when you post nonsense such as the above..

Sorry, i was wrong. Barclaycard don't have any iphone or android app. Its just that when i log onto my barclaycard account, i get bombarded with their iphone app advert which i thought was their official app but it turns out to be just their stupid rollercoaster game.

Anyway just looking around the Apple store, RBS and HSBC (business banking) also have official apps. HSBC will release one soon for their personal account customers. So now we have First Direct, Natwest, RBS, HSBC who all cater for their customers who have iphones. Yet they seem to have forgotten about their customers who have Android handsets. Why is that then? (genuine question)

And also why have Vodafone and O2 not made Android apps? (again genuine question)

You would have to ask them, as I have no insight on that i'm afraid. Almost certainly all the Banking apps for iPhone that are available are not written by the Bank's development teams, but rather outsourced to a third party.

I am still reading the views thanks; haven't committed yet!!

O2 have a flash sale this weekend with bothe the Galaxy S and Xperia Arc available on teh same contract the 3 GS is on, but for £16.50 a month (£5 cheaper) - this seems a very good deal for high spec Android phones. Android 2.2 or 2.3 the Galaxy even has a 1 Ghz processor and 8 Gb memor, 4" AMOLED screen - does this change everything, again? ;)

Not a bad deal tariff wise, the galaxy s is the older model though and the arc is not a reliable handset IMO
