MSE News: Scottish Power to hike energy prices

I agree that the "ScottishPower Direct October 2012" tariff seems very good value at the moment, but isn't that only because the amounts being quoted are 1% below the pre August 2011 standard monthly direct debit prices which we know will be going up on 1st August, as they have already published the increased August 2011 standard monthly direct debit prices on their site.
Am I right, or have I missed something?
No you are right. I went onto the Scottish Power site and saw the Direct October 2012 and rang Scottish Power and they said that the rate would increase from 1/8/11 and if I switched from the OES 10 I am on now I would see an increase in unit costs from today. They suggested a capped rate till June 2013 but we would have to pay more now until 1st Aug when the capped rate kicked in. She said we could do it later but they don't know when it is going to be pulled and this could be before 1/8. This would save us £85 per year. Yet I went onto a switching site and they recommended British GAs saving us £276 based on our actual kWh usage ! Who can you believe and how do we know that British Gas will not increase their rates again0 -

When i spoke to SP yesterday, they said that the Direct October 2012 was a new tarrif that is not affected by the price rises (along with OES14).
So much mis-information!0 -
I have decided to switch to Direct Oct 2012 from OES11 and was told on the phone that the prices I have been given won't go up again in 1/8.
Lets just hope there isn't another rise in the next few months otherwise I'm going to have to do this again!
PS There is no exit fee to pay if you stay with SP and change packages0 -
Just got off the phone to Scottish Power and the lady told me that as the change is as a result of a price increase, I would not have to pay the exit fees of £50 (dual fuel) - EVEN IF I move to a different supplier.
Result ! Right... I'm off to the comparison sites...0 -
I don't suppose anyone would know if it's possible to switch to a non-Economy 7 tariff - or from a non-standing charge to a standing charge based tariff ?
If so, do the comparison sites take that into account when calculating the best deals ?
I'm currently on Economy 7 and only use about 16-18% electricity at the night rate, and I'm paying a slight premium on the day rate for this.
I'm considering switching to a non-Economy 7 tariff, and also wondering whether a standing charge based one might prove cheaper again.
Anyone have any experience of this ?

Just on a side note, I got SP's last price hike email 3 months after the prices increased... I still haven't had an email for this one!0

New OFGEM regulations say they have to notify you 30 days in advance (this was only implimented recently).
The increase doesn't start until August, so there's a little while yet.0 -
I wish SP would just make the OES 14 option available from the 'change my service' section in my account. That way I don't need to call them.0

Hi
Please be careful when using energyhelpline for a comparison. I have just used them as I am on the Scottish Power online capped enery sept 2011 dual fuel where I found a saving of £65 for my gas and £174 for my electricity. So even taking a £50 penalty for coming out of it, it is worth while. HOWEVER when i looked at the tariff energyhelpline was using they were very different. The standing charge they quoted included VAT and was much lower than what Scottish Power sent me on my bill. I then telephoned Scottish Power to confirm the prices on my bill. I then phoned energyhelpline who then have told me that it will take a few days to change the prices.
So this £241 savings is not correct!!!!!0 -
My email has this smallprint;*If you notify us that you wish to cancel your agreement before 1st August 2011 and we receive a request for your supply from another supplier within 15 working days, we will not apply the price increase or the cancellation fee for your product. If you have an outstanding debt, we may object to your supply leaving us, but we will give you time to pay the debt and leave us without incurring the increased prices.0
