Dr Dragon uses the phrase "a lack of planning on your part will not lead to a crisis on mine" - in other words get organised and I will help, don't and you are on your own! :p

hi Uni, sorry to hear about work, Nora can you come to my office and have a similar conversation with the people there? I'm still feeling out of sorts because i got a narky phone call on friday from somone, basically having a go at me because i said i'd made the same corrections in their work two months in a row, and despite them being asked to correct things they haven't done it, so if it's the same next month then it will be going back to them to correct as i won't be doing it. I was probably a bit blunt but i think i was fair and i asked nicely last time.

I really hope your weekend has picked up Uni and you have a lovely sunday.

Ahhh, yes - know this one too. This is basically just deflection - I'll have a go at you, so you don't get a chance to have a go at me.

Stay calm (because you are wonderful, professional...and 'cos it'll wind the other party up something chronic ;)), and keep a note of each time you have had to speak to this individual about the quality of their work.

I wouldn't just lob it straight back at him if he makes the same mistakes again - to your management, that could look bad on you. But I would certainly have a word with your own manager and let him/her/it know what you're dealing with and how you're tackling it (ie by being professional, helpful as a company employee and colleague, but firm so that your own performance isn't impacted...).

Personally I would pull this person aside and explain that it isn't acceptable for them to speak to you the way they did on Friday. My nature is such that I tend to tackle such things head on, but in a fairly genial manner (until I'm royally pisticled off...) "look, we can't keep having this conversation every month...".

It's worth checking whether there are proper escalation routes for complaints/disputes within your office - just so you have it in your back pocket if necessary.

Depending on how comfortable or confident you are about dealing with such things, it's always worth first checking whether the individual actually knows what they should be doing, and understands why it's important/part of their job (assuming it is!).

Lots of people feel it's not their job/place to ask if they aren't the direct line manager - but I beg to differ. We're all on the same side after all (the one where, providing we're not slackers etc., we stay employed and get paid). If you're a colleague, then you're looking out for each other and the company reputation by checking the basics are in place. If you're a manager (whether or not you're a direct line manager) you have a general responsibility to the workforce - and the ear of the individual's manager if appropriate. If you're within the same 'supply chain' as that person (which is what it sounds like here), then your performance and reputation are relient on this person doing their job properly, just as they are relient on you doing yours....

So anyway, if they know what they should be doing, and they're just being a git, then you point out that there is no reason for the consistent oversight, and that next time you'll push it up the chain to be dealt with. And remember to document the exchange (talk first, then follow up with email - cc to your boss if you feel more secure that way. Whatever you do, don't get into an email exchange or debate/argument).

Anyway, as I said at the start - make sure your own manager knows (purely on a 'I'm dealing, but you'll want to be aware just in case I have to come to you in the future about this' basis). Partly because this immediately covers your back if anything goes wrong, also because it alerts the manager that there is an issue with the employee (you never know, they may be dealing with other problems so this is important intel for them), and it shows how capable you are, and that you know when to tackle things yourself and when to escalate them.

    Hope that helps!

thank you Nora you're so right. The trouble is we're employees of different organisations who are being forced to work together, therefore there's lots of politicking going on. I blame it on the attitude of the heads of our units, ours is laid back, more its going to happen so make a good job of it, there's isn't and therefore they seem to be making lots of hurdles. Also the attitude is that we have to do everything as they want it but they don't care about what we may need. I'm sure that this is thought on their side as well but it's just reaching critical mass. My manager is aware and fully supports me and my team, and keeps trying to fight for us but it's very challenging to say the least.
sorry to take over your diary Uni, i should have kept this to my own (just worried i may be traced back if someone figures out who i am).

Hope your day is going well Uni, i love Dr Dragon's moto, i'm seriously considering putting it on the wall behind me, or the door into our office.
