True enough, but this Kia was only a 1.6 -- hardly a speed demon :)

Everything's so far away too :wall: - keep driving like 30 miles to find a car is sold / shagged.

You'll only be owning it a few months -- I don't think the HG problem is that much of a nightmare in this timescale given everything else that might go bang.

I wouldn't be scared of the Rover, if it was cheap enough.

Find yourself a mollicoddled Kia Mentor and pay £200 for it,
    you know it makes sense....

    Best suggestion so far.

    Other shed contendors..

Chrysler Neon. crap on fuel, awful auto gearbox, but if you can find a manual they're not bad at all, and for the price of a b&q shed, quite a bargain.

Daewoo leganza. 2.0 (cdx if you can), again not great on fuel, but nots of car for the cash. Kalos an alternative if you want something astra size.
If you can get a lanos 1.6 for £200, with 6 months ticket, then they're not too bad either

Honda accord -not driven one personally, but have a decent rep for being well screwed together. Plenty of 2001 models around for under £1k, even if they've driven to the moon and back

Mitsubushi carisma - ironic name, but cheap. Bit like a primera I think.

There's not plenty of anything around near here for under £1k, but thanks for the suggestions. Anything bigger than a 1.8 is going to be practically uninsureable though.

Agree completely (although I think it's the Nubira you're looking for rather than Kalos). The point of buying a shed is that you kick it into the long grass if anything major goes bang on it, so worrying about dents, or parts prices or being able to get hold of a new engine if the one in the car explodes are irrelevant. Best condition and longest ticket at the time and everything else is secondary.

Things like Carismas (unloved, and GDI engines troublesome if run on rubbish fuel, but 1.6 and diesels strong as they come), Chrysler Neons (horrible rep but not really deserved, especially at the price) and anything Korean and >8 years old are so worthless that they're usually the cars with the most life left in them -- and because people *still* overlook them at £300 they're the ones that are most likely to be easily-found gems.

And as you own a Korean box already, people have done all the sniffing they're ever going to do :)

    :D

I might go to the auctions in Kinross tomorrow night and see what's going - are there many cars at auction with tax though?

The nubira is the big estate thing isn't it? Kalos is cheap (think its a 1.2), should be reliable and still fairly modern, not much in the way of nexia in the bonnet. If insurance is that much of a problem, then anything over a 1.4 petrol will be problematic, and you wouldn't want a weedy engine with a hulk of a car.

Some more then to consider then, I'm guessing they'll all be well under £1000

    Mazda 323 1.3l, 5d , should be plenty about

Most daihatus will fit the bill, quite like the little terios 4x4 1.3l!

Suzuki Wagon R. Ugly as hell mind.

No, anything over a 1.8 is problematic, like I said.

Some of the more unknown / less popular stuff can generate nutty quites too though (Proton Satria 1.6 was £stupid)

Nubira comes as saloon and estate. The estate tends to fetch reasonable money as it's a very useful car with a cavernous boot, but the rather pug-ugly saloon is ignored. This is a shame as I owned one for some years and found it to be a comfortable, reliable and perfectly competent car. It's a bit noisy, the handling is boat-like and the interior has a rather comical attempt at a soft-touch dashboard, but it's also pretty quick for a 1.6 and is quite capable of trundling along the motorway at eig... er, seventy miles per hour.

Hmmm, bit on the expensive side (it's not taxed) but thoughts? http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/green-peugeot-405-1995/81180218
