You can get the entire cambelt kit from Autovaux at a good price, under £50, add in a water pump and off you go.
I had the engine management light come on in the 52 plate i am using. Popped into Candem fitters and it was reset in 10 minutes.
But the 1.7dti has cheap roadtax and i would expect you can get it remapped to increase the amount of urge if needed.
If you get parts from the likes ofAutovaux an older Vauxhall makes a good bargain runner.
Car Mechanics Mag have a 1.7dti estate as a long term project at the moment. Just avoid ex Taxis!0 -
I have Vauxhall diagnostics kit actually, used to own an Astra H which had electrical gremlins by the bucketload0

Age, mileage, tax, MOT ?
99 V 96ish k, MOT 24th october Tax end August - cambelt/waterpump last year, new rear shoes, good front discs/pads and decent tread on all tyres
Huh? :rotfl:
Believe it or not - in the last two and a half years I have had about 9 cars and the megane (hers) has been far and away the most reliable, waterpump started to make noises last year hence new pump and belt + it's going to need a driveshaft soonish. In fairness it must do all of about 5k a year and most of that mileage is when I take it to work, bloody hate driving it though (not the best for sale ad here i'll admit)0 -

They're a bit bloody expensive up there in Scotland aren't they? I've noticed the price of fuel is a bit stupid as well!
£750 for a Y-reg Primera is too much as well -- I only got £285 for mine which, though cosmetically a shed, was mechanically still good for a fair few more thousand miles.
If you think that's too much I saw someone wanting £700 for a N reg 1.6 Primera Equation - 111k on the clock, MOT Jan, no tax.
Rusty sills, had a couple of knocks etc. Guy claimed he'd get that for it at auction all day long (and claimed to have paid £650 for it yet was asking £695 and claimed it'd be valeted b efore I bought it). I left at this point :rotfl:0 -
Bah -- we could have done a swap if the timing had been right (I'm working in Livingston presently) -- your Bridgestone A001s for my old Primera heap lol.0

I just can't find anything - these bargainous £300 sheds that people seem to find aren't forthcoming. Gutted I missed that Focus tbh0 -
Ebay is your friend. Bid on *absolutely anything* that runs and has some test. Buy for £150, if it blows up, weigh it in and move on.
I noticed, in the North East, a Kia Mentor on ebay a few weeks ago that auctioned for £370. It was a 53 plate with service history, looked in good condition in red and only 40,000 miles. These were a seriously dated car even when they were new (they were based on a late 1980s Mazda 323) but they were also reasonably well made and reliable (although the interiors felt as if they were made of chocolate box insides and had a curious fishy smell when new).
Never mind shed, if I hadn't bought the Mitsubishi I'd have been looking to buy that as a long-term second-car runner!0 -
1.6 is fine as it's full Honda, the 1.4 is the one to run away from, very, very fast! Or see if theres a diesel one about... they use the BMW lump IIRC?
You need to check as from what i have been told very few of the later Rovers had Honda engines.
This was news to me aswell, but the 1.6 auto had a Honda engine and box, but the facelift model had some tiptronic gearbox and not a Honda engine.
The HG problems aren't as bad as some think but they need to be considered.
My mates other half bought an S reg 214si, £300 with a blown HG, car was 6 yrs old at the time and had less than 50k on it, previous owner hadn't checked the water level for months.
They had it repaired and it is still in use today, been troublefree, this is the small bubble shape in 3 dr form.
Does over 40mpg and is nippy and handles well.
The 400/45 was also underrated, a nice car in saloon form, bought a 420GSi at the auction for £425, low miles full history, nice alloys, comfy leather seats , only drawback was the fuel economy at low 30's at best.
Sold it a month later for a grand. Was a nice car though, that was an R plate so about 7 years old at the time.
For the money you can't beat the value, but always take care when buying a Rover with a petrol engine, bought well they are good bangernomic cars. Most garages can change theHG with their eyes closed.0 -

Insurance is a concern too though - I can't just buy absolutely anything0
