More shed hunting....

After my first bad experience I'm thinking about buying a shed again - this time with a higher budget though, aiming to recoup this when I sell the car in a couple of months. More risk, but more chance of making it to my destination :D

Currently looking at a couple of cars - 1999 (T) Ford Mondeo 1.8 LX Estate - 12 months MOT, tax til Aug, £795. Looks like it's in good condition but I'm not sure what the mileage is yet.

.... and the possible hand grenade - 2000 (W) Renault Scenic 1.9 dTI - 12 months MOT, 12 months tax - £1250. I'd be looking to reduce that price to at least the same as the Mondeo though because it has 149k on the clock and books at about £370 so unless the dealer has spent a load on it ( hmmm....) his price is unrealistic.

Thoughts? Looking at cars with as close to 12M MOT as possible to maximise chance of resale when I'm done.

the best thing is to buy it off a trader as you have some sort of gaurantee (sorry cant spell)

Both cars are from traders - the Mondeo from one I know to be trustworthy (I bought the previous shed from them and the guy was very reasonable when I returned it having discovered a serious fault we were both unaware of)

I guess the Mondeo will be the more reliable car - don't know what older Renault diesels are like, mind.

Also saw a 1.8 Vectra for £400 somewhere else with long MOT and tax but it's got aftermarket alloy wheels and a spoiler on it which puts me off due to insurance / the fact it'll probably have been ragged to death. I could remove the spoiler but the wheels would need to be declared.

If you think you'll be able to get a dealer to reduce the price from £1250 down to £795 in one go, then I think you are living on another planet. If you came to me I'd tell you to do one!

    Good luck! ;)

I think the dealer's on another planet trying to get £1250 for an intergalactic Scenic that he's taken in part exchange ;)

I dont think the dealer is being unrealistic (maybe knock off £100 - £200) but the positives about that car are a) it's a diesel and b) it's a Scenic.... people go nuts for them, seriously! They are a great car, great ride, family wagon. Things to look out for are: signs of 'family' abuse in the back, such as the chair back tables etc, all windows work, remote locking, air-con etc etc.

Fair enough, didn't realise there was much demand for them as they aged - Mondeo seems a better option anyway (reliability?)

If the Mondeo is petrol then I would very seriously walk away and buy the Scenic!

Simple bangernomics, if the mondeo is a 1.8 petrol then its going to return mid 30's MPG, the Scenic late 40's.... I'm sure that some will tell me that they would rather die than own one but I had 2 (99 V and 2004 54 1.5 DCi) and, yes they have issues but...
