Perhaps you could start a campaign. On the 1st of jan 2012 we all take our number plates and tax discs off and drive around with no insurance or mot as and when they run out too. 35 million owners cant be prosecuted, its too many. The gov may shut down all petrol stations as punishment so fill up first and keep 50 gallons in the shed.

Your right they couldn't prosecute everyone but as the insurance stuff is automated now the computer might be able to print a few thousand off before it melts down. Either way they would still prosecute as many as possible. :rotfl::rotfl:

    35 million at £100 a go?

Probably worth setting up a new department for £3,500,000,000 revenue.

Much as I hate the new legislation, driving around uninsured could have very bad consequences for you and others.

    Best not to do it.

I am insured to drive any other car, third party as long as it does not belong to me. I now cannot do this as according to the DVLA the car is not insured.
With lots of insurance policies you can only drive another vehicle if that vehicle is insured in its own right. Lots of people dont read the T&Cs of their insurance and think 'any vehicle' means just that until they get pulled over because the of 'no insurance' at which time they find their insurance doesn't cover them either, result points and a fine.

I am not saying that applies to you but have you checked?

OK, plan b... I just had the thought that someone was going to ask so here it is.

I have a friend who has a 4x4 the same make/model & quite close in colour as mine.

If pushed plan b will involve me simply to SORN my 4x4, cash the tax in & pay my friend the small £40 it would cost to add me to his insurance.

Simply get a spare set of number plates made up & obtain a second tax disk and problem solved.... no one would look near me.... even without a tax disk to display it would still come up ok on computer.

I refuse point blank to be forced into paying for an annual policy for my 4x4 when I only use it maximum of 8 times in a year.

£80-£90 currently spend on insurance over a year

    V

    £400 + annual policy

    Which one would you choose??
This would involve your friend agreeing & colluding:

-adding you to his insurance so you can clone his car
-using his documents to get spare numberplates
-using his documents to get 2nd tax disc
-driving your car cloned as his car with associated risks of accident, parking & speeding tickets, accidentally getting stopped by police & having to explain

He'd have to be pretty stupid as most adults know that if there was trouble you'd run a mile & blame him !

Agreed, plus the fact it would constitute as insurance fraud which will have ramifications down the line!!

I don't think anyone likes the new law but you only have two options, SORN and don't use or pay up...........simples

He could eaily deny all knowledge of the "clone".

1 - Ok yes he would need to put me on his insurance, nothing wrong with that.
2- Dont need documents to get number plates.... your suposed to but very easy without. I got for my daily car when one broke without any ID or anything.
3- dont need tax, even without a tax disk shown it would come up on ANPR as ok/taxed.
4(A) - risk of accident when used at 8 times a year is very, very small
4(B) - speeding... very unlikely. its an old 4x4 that struggles to do 40mph.

I do agree that blan B is stupid but I refuse to be forced into paying for an annual policy... Thats my point. It forces a lot of genuine motorists into braking the law... im not the only one that will end up having to find some way around it.

The point made about both vehicles being stopped at the same time/caught on ANPR... His 4x4 is like mine, used very few times a year, the only reason he has annual insurance is because he is older & has about 10 years NCB on it, £80 a year I think.

Looking at plan B and the points made, I agree, I dont want to do it and I will only be doing this as a very last resort.... I believe the chance of getting caught doing plan B is actually very slim... Whereas if I leave it taxed & not insured in my garage, the change of getting an automated letter with a £100 fine is actually very high.

No... I better had. I'll admit to not generally reading the T's & C's even though I know I should. I'd be willing to bet that perhaps one in a hundred may bother...

    Cheers for the warning.
