And when the dvla insist it's sorn. and send out the fine, despite you having a tax disk?
And then the police rely on the dvla database, and tell you your tax disk isn't valid, and impound the van.
How many times do you think they've heard it off people that "lose" the tax disk, get a duplicate, then cash it in and put the duplicate in the window.?
They may or may not believe you, but you can prove you have a valid tax disc if you are registered keeper.

    It's either taxed or sorned.
By declaring sorn you cancel the tax, you don't have the option of both.

    That is open to question.

They don't insist you get a refund, when you declare SORN.
If you ask for a refund, they expect you to SORN.

Needs to be checked with DVLA.

if you declare the car sorn then you must send the tax back no ifs or buts, your tax disc is invalid from the moment the car is sorned so you may as well send it back for a refund because its about as much use as a chocolate ashtray

Some insurance policies, maybe most, say you must keep car taxed & mot'd.[/QUOTE

They can all say whatever they want but at the end of the day your insurance is not invalid if your vehicle is not taxed or has no mot. FACT

If that really is the case then surely when you SORN online, like I just have they should state the tax disk MUST be returned not MAY be returned?

They certainly haven't made it clear that once SORN your current tax is invalid. It also stated that my car was not up for renewal on tax so the system knows I have a valid tax disk.

    Nonsense.

When declaring SORN it does not tell you you have to return tax disc & DVLA does not contact you.

    You don't know.

I have seen nothing that says tax disc is invalid.
Can you provide any proof ?

found this link, i guess im in the complaints figures
i posted the other day that im in dispute with dvla over sorn forms posted into them stapled to v5c applications for a log book ,dvla assured me the investigation would result in an email update of how it was going,on saturday i checked the dvla tax your car website to find the details had been updated and yesterday confirmation letters arrived,it would therefore seem that their enquiry is once again closed and therefore they will not contact me,for this reason i do not believe the figures in the link
When i was in dispute last year over the very same thing i received a half baked telephone apology, nothing in writing so i suggest to anyone sorning their cars that they do it by internet and print off the confirmation number, or sorn it at the post office as postal does NOT seem a sure way of doing it even now

please take your time to go through the freedom of information link and note they keep hiding behind the £600 charge

the link is to dvla so no worries

Definitely do the SORN online, much easier, quicker and you get a confirmation email too.
