Does anyone smell a bit of a rat here.

Cut backs to Public Sector jobs; DVLA dream up a right pig's ear of an idea that will cause phone calls and mayhem and need lots of staff to handle.

    Solutions?

Do away with road tax and:-

Increase Insurance Premium Tax from 6% to 20% (On motor insurance), so the government get the revenue that way.
Hit those driving with no insurance harder.

Increase tax on fuel, so the more miles you drive the more tax you pay. downside - fuel theft will increase - upside - foreign vehicles will be contributing to the coffers.

Pay a bill at the time of MOT depending on how many miles you've done - won't work as you may sell a car half way through the MOT year, and rogues will fiddle the odometer.

The road tax should be scrapped, its just a mass of paperwork involved and the system is totally stupid. There are many scenerios as to why a car maybe taxed and MOT'd but not insured. How many people have summer cars or winter 4x4's that they only use for say a couple of months at a time. They will have to lose money on the road tax if they don't use the full 6 months. Insurers are going to be getting lots of part policy cancellations (and there cancellation fees). SO yet again the honest motorist suffers.

Adding tax (I know its high enough as it is) is the only fairest way to get rid of the road tax, if you use the roads more your using more fuel so have to pay a bigger share then someone who uses the car less. At the moment the guy who does 50k miles a year is paying the same road tax as the old man who does 3k mile a year.

They need to sort the SORN out though as all they have done now is made more work for the DVLA who can't even get simple requests right now. SORN should be able to be on or off like car insurance say without the need for returning the tax disk. If you want to claim your money back from tax disk fine but if you don't then you shouldn't be forced too.

"SORN should be able to be on or off like car insurance say without the need for returning the tax disk."

I totally agree. I have just submitted my SORN online just incase I get any scary letters about no insurance.

I still have the tax disk which is valid until december so im concidering keeping it and not cashing it in. I would therefore have valid tax so Im just wondering what would happen if I hold on to that and get temporary insurance when I need it.

Surely they cannot do me for no tax if I use the vehicle as I do have tax. They could mayby say something about using the vehicle while SORN but theres no way to un-SORN it at the moment other than to cash in tax & then re-buy.

I could be wrong on this though... Is there a way to declaire the car back on the road without cashing in the tax & re-buying??

I'm just about to do the same thing myself. When you did the SORN online did it say you had to send the tax disk back or anything relating to the tax??

why would you want to declare sorn and not cash the disc, adding to govt coffers?
    madness
    do the funky gibbon sorn
download appropriate tax claim form, stick tax disc on it in post with receiver to sign for it
    wait for cheeque in post
if you decide to put back on road just go tax it
remember once sorn declared tax disc invalid, this is why when you tax a car at the post office mary reminds you its already taxed ,but it isnt because it might be on sorn or dave at the auctions nicked it but cant cash it because log book not in his name

Simply because the time frame the car is off the road means I will lose money and the government gains....yet again. If the car was to be off road for a prolonged period then no problem. Mine is going to be off for 2 maybe 3 weeks, if they don't process it before 1st of july I will lose another 1 months refund. Mine expires in september which means I will now have to stump up another couple hundred to get the tax back on in 2-3 weeks plus the upfront cost of the insurance, makes for a pretty expensive few days!!!

Apart from this bit on the V14
"If you tax your vehicle within 21 days of making a SORN you will
not qualify for or get a refund."

Its worded really badly on the download form, so i would be confirming to dvla what this actually referred to before i took it on board .
I got dvla to change the sorn when it first came out because it was flawed. (well it might have been me or hundreds)
So if they dont know and nobody challenges them then nothing gets done.
As a for instance im in dispute over 2 vehicles in my name that i sorned (it was 3 but ones now sold and i taxed it),they say they never received them but i proved to them i did, they said they would open a case, ive checked on the website and they are now on sorn but no letters no confirmation no nothing

Sally I understand what your saying but we are talking about insurers here, they are not exactly known for being generous, bit like bankers. They WILL hike the price up on the second car because they CAN.

I've already seen this from Liverpool Victoria. Until recently, if you informed them of a change of car you had a free 14-day grace period where the old one was still covered, thus allowing you to do test drives when selling privately. They've dropped the free cover just in time for the new law, and for me want £90 to cover my 10 year old Mondeo 1.8 for two weeks!:eek:
