You will get a lower price for your car for all those options you have stated except for selling before buying a new one. Once you have sold your car you are then limited to only buying from within a reasonable distance unless you have access to another car to be able to go and view it.
Its going to end up with buyers being in a chain like house buying lol, you can't have my car until I have found a new one.
As I said before the idea in principle is fine but the way SORN is carried out is outdated and needs to brought inline so you can still move the car off road but for tax to remain if the owner wants to sell it say. The only people to benefit are going to be the government from all the tax disks where you will be short changed and the dealers (those that take the !!!!) who will start offering even lower trade prices.
On the upside though, if you have time on your hands and you can wait for insurance docs to come through etc used car prices may fall.
Whats the law regarding MOTing a car without tax or insurance as if you have no MOT you can't tax the car, if it hasn't got tax its not supposed to be on the road and will be classed as SORN.??
only people to benefit will be those who dont have a licesnse and dont care cars will be cheaper to buy so easier to obtain, plate thefts will increase to avoid being stopped. just means that the ones who want to drive illaglly have to do a bit more leg work, millenium theft will probably increase as result also.0 -
You can drive a car to a NEAR MOT station without tax - the vehicle must be booked in (and yes Plod will check), you should not stop on the way, as this breaks the direct journey, you may also drive it home if it fails, and then park it off road. It must be insured though.
So yes, another complication for those trying to be legal.
If you have no insurance, some garages will collect, so the insurance would be on their Motor Trade insurance.
but how will small buisinesses cope with a higher demand of people asking them to collect and drop off for mot, as it means more time for mechanics and testers out of the garage, the knock on affect will be less cars to mot a day, does a garage increase prices in accordance for the loss of work load?0 -

You can also drive it back and to the place of repair, and that can be anything from a full blown garage, to your dad's shed with the welder.0 -
A lot of garages have retired part time helpers/drivers on the books, and with the garages need to survive as less people are getting regular services, they are starting to give these added extras.
You are more likely to get this service from a garage who does MOT's at the normal £50+ rate, rather than those offering it for £30.0 -

so effectivly taking away the right to shop around for deals.
no tax+ no insurance = get a garage that costs £50+ MOT to collect the car.
no tax + no insurance= you have to make do with that garage round the courner you have heared horro stories about and most locals avoid to avoid being stopped etc.
no tax but insured means you can arrange an over the phone mot or if you have a second car call in on the cheapest and arrange one and then drive there? but heaven forbid you have detour on the way and get stopped. just imagine it now, coppa "car not mot'd sir", you;"yes i know im travelling to getmycarmot'dtoday garage on governemnt road" coppa:" but thats in the opposite direction sir is there any reason why you traveling this way?" you:"yes the temporary lights at roadworks avenue are not working i turned around and came this way because of traffic" coppa: "really sir i have just come through there and the lights are working just traffic build up as normal so where you really headed sir?" you: "i told you MOT give them a call if you like" coppa calls them enganged or no answer, Coppa: "i have reasonable doubt you are taking this car for mot sir and therefor i'm issuing a ticket of a fixed penalty of £60, if you prove that you car was mot'd today then you may contest it, however if you fail to do so you may end up at court and ordered to pay more" by the time all this has taken place you miss your apointment and have to rebook for next week and try and get a written explanation from the garage to support your claim to taking it there because if you dont and have a new appointment time the apeal is going to fall on its feet.0 -
pitkin2020 wrote: »Sell your old one whilst you have the new one ready in waiting off road for swapping over Should still receive a decent price for your car but you will need the funds to purchase the new car without the sale of yours (no different to now I know). If you can't leave the car say with the dealer until yours is sold you will have to pay for tax and insurance then have to SORN the car losing money on the tax.
If you buy from a dealer, you will also have the problem of not being able to drive the new one to find any faults within warranty period.
Better to p/x & if not possible just to chat with dealers pick out a few possible cars and when you have sold, to go and find them still on the yard and buy one in order of preference.
Could do a similar thing with private sales, keep your eye on the ball at possibles, and when you sell, to find which ones have not yet sold that you can go and get.0 -
This thread is getting a bit over complicated.
If you are buying a new car, just tell your insurers of the change and ask them to hold covered on the old vehicle for a month until sold.
The downside is, one of the vehicles may be taken off the MID (usually the older vehicle), so ensure you have a cert/cover note to back up that the vehicle is on a cover extension.0 -
You're assuming your insurer will be willing and will be willing to do it for a month, and that you can sell the old one within a month.
Obviously if you have two cars that is the first thing you will look into doing.0 -
My insurer did (RSA via the brokerage where I work - it's standard, not a staff perk).
If you read a comment I posted previously on this thread, this is why people fall for lowest price with direct insurers - but they will hit you for every favour/change/amendment/correction making the saving a false one, unless you are confident tht from inception date you will not change any details for the next 12 months.0 -
Sally I understand what your saying but we are talking about insurers here, they are not exactly known for being generous, bit like bankers. They WILL hike the price up on the second car because they CAN.
Thanks for the info on the MOT but again its catch 22 as isn't your insurance invalidated if you don't have a current tax disk or MOT?? SO whilst you may have cover they won't pay out in the event of an accident.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0
