im still waiting for my email update on the sorn mess they have made of the vehicles i sorned,i have since sold one but still have 2,they assure me its gone to investigations
interesting i see you say you can run sorned cars on trade plates, ive never been able to get anyone confirm i can do this Sally A0 -
When changing your car, the insurance company has always told me that I am covered to drive both the old car that I am trading in and the new car that I have purchased, they give a limited grace period where both cars are covered, I think it is usually +/- a couple of hours around the time you inform the insurance company of the swap.
The problem has always been that insurance companies do not always update the MIB database (MID) in good time so the police could stop you for no insurance. If these new continuous insurance rules mean that the police are not going to stop people for "no insurance", leaving enforcement up to DVLA then it may be an improvement, but I cannot see the police stopping doing these insurance checks.
The DVLA are already poor at doing the tasks they are responsible for (Vehicle Registration, Vehicle Tax, Driver Licensing) so adding this additional responsibility to their workload is a really bad idea (in my opinion)
The insurance industry are not going to reduce premiums on the back of this new legislation, I understand that it is only a very small percentage of the insurance cost that is attributable to uninsured drivers.
Some insurance companies do, I can tell you for sure Donedeal don't bunch of ********.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
So long as the Trade Plate is on the Insurance Database, it effectively gives temporary insurance and tax for the vehicle whilst on the road.0

yes i know that thanks and yes they are
but
you arent supposed to put a sorned car on the road
ive even been tempted to remove the normal plates but thought this was overkill0 -
How do you insure a car ?
Traders policy ? for any driver ?
You insure yourself as a driver.
this is a bad law dreamed up by rich people(politicians) who invest in insurance (LLoyds of London)
How much more will it take before we break.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
The Trade Plate should override the SORN'd reg no.
Think along the lines of main dealers with brand new demonstrators that have no tax - what do they do? shove a trade plate on.
If you are with a decent broker and insurer they should have no issues confirming this in writing to you.0 -
if you go to the DVLA web site you will see that if the vehicle is on a SORN it does NOT have to be insured.
This is fine if you are keeping the car and for what ever reason take it off the road.
The problem arises when lets say you use your car everyday for work and can not be without. You decide its time for a new car and go buy said new car. What can you do with your old one, if you trade it in you'll get a rubbish price (most of the time) so you decide to sell it privately. Now though you either have to take another insurance policy out on a car your not going to be using or you have to hand back your tax disk and SORN the car.
When a potential buyer comes before they could get one day insurance for a test drive buy the car and drive off. Oh no not now. They won't be able to test drive it full stop as it will have no tax on it. If they decide to buy the car without test driving they still can't drive away in it after purchase, they will have to arrange insurance, wait for the docs and go and buy a tax disk which could take hours if online docs come through, could take days by post.
Either way people aren't going to go miles to view a car they can't test drive and then go miles back to collect it at a later date.
The only people likely to benefit from this is the dealers who will take part exs in, as people will find it harder to shift your average car privately so will trade in for less hassle, and I wouldn't be surprised to see most dealers capitalise on this and start offering even lower money then they usually do.
It won't stop uninsured drivers what so ever, cloned plates will rise or they will just drive around using a car classed as SORN.
Insurance premiums will still continue to rise and I suspect they will get stricter on the grace period (if they do it) when purchasing a new car and charging extra for it as basically they have you over a barrel.
Uninsured cars are a big problem but putting a blanket ban on uninsured vehicles isn't the way to go about it. It wouldn't be so bad if the SORN system wasn't so !!!! about face. If they allowed you to keep the tax on it then it would be ok but again its another way to generate more money by people SORNing the car, handing back the tax disk getting the last few months minus £7 fee and a new person paying extra for the tax all over again.

@pitkin2020
If you swap your vehicles over, it's not unrealistic to ask for 14 days extra cover on both whilst the old one is sold. I'm with RSA (through the broker where I work ) and they gave me this cover at no extra charge.
I imiagine if you wanted to extend this and could prove it was up for sale, they would assist....but you'd probably get charged.0 -
People are going to have to get used to selling before buying the replacement, or buy the the replacement and store it off road until you sel the old one.0
