If you swap your vehicles over, it's not unrealistic to ask for 14 days extra cover on both whilst the old one is sold. I'm with RSA (through the broker where I work ) and they gave me this cover at no extra charge.
I imiagine if you wanted to extend this and could prove it was up for sale, they would assist....but you'd probably get charged.
TBF most insurers I have been with are happy to do this obviously at extra cost. I have only not been able to do it once before when I went back from a van to a car as they were just van insurers, which was fair enough. Done deal though point blank refused to give me any grace but still charged me £25 for changing the car over to another, it was one car or the other.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
People are going to have to get used to selling before buying the replacement, or buy the the replacement and store it off road until you sel the old one.
Its really not that simple though, some people use there cars for work. I for one could not work what so ever without the car so selling the car first isn't an option. Buying a car then selling your old one is fine if you have the capital to do that, but again if you are buying from a seller who is still using the car and it has tax etc on it then you are still going to have to trade the tax in and SORN it.
Also would you want to buy a new car and have it sat there for a week, two weeks even a month whilst trying to sell your old car.....I think not.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

..and this is where the direct insurers are getting the money back from the savings you make by going to them.
To get great online savings they are stripping away policy cover and "extras", but will hit you big time if you dare to change anything halfway through the insurance year, they want you to pay up and not have any changes or accidents in 12 months = easy money in the bank.
If you have any planned changes in the forseeable 12 months, call the company and get a quote before you insure with them (and get the name of the person you speak to, and which office they are operating from, log the time and date too). I appreciate this is not a normal thing to consider when you are looking for cheap insurance, but it can save you money in the long run and keep you out of the do-do.0 -

The problem arises when lets say you use your car everyday for work and can not be without. You decide its time for a new car and go buy said new car. What can you do with your old one, if you trade it in you'll get a rubbish price (most of the time) so you decide to sell it privately. Now though you either have to take another insurance policy out on a car your not going to be using or you have to hand back your tax disk and SORN the car.
When a potential buyer comes before they could get one day insurance for a test drive buy the car and drive off. Oh no not now. They won't be able to test drive it full stop as it will have no tax on it. If they decide to buy the car without test driving they still can't drive away in it after purchase, they will have to arrange insurance, wait for the docs and go and buy a tax disk which could take hours if online docs come through, could take days by post.
Either way people aren't going to go miles to view a car they can't test drive and then go miles back to collect it at a later date.
The only people likely to benefit from this is the dealers who will take part exs in, as people will find it harder to shift your average car privately so will trade in for less hassle, and I wouldn't be surprised to see most dealers capitalise on this and start offering even lower money then they usually do.
It won't stop uninsured drivers what so ever, cloned plates will rise or they will just drive around using a car classed as SORN.
Insurance premiums will still continue to rise and I suspect they will get stricter on the grace period (if they do it) when purchasing a new car and charging extra for it as basically they have you over a barrel.
Uninsured cars are a big problem but putting a blanket ban on uninsured vehicles isn't the way to go about it. It wouldn't be so bad if the SORN system wasn't so !!!! about face. If they allowed you to keep the tax on it then it would be ok but again its another way to generate more money by people SORNing the car, handing back the tax disk getting the last few months minus £7 fee and a new person paying extra for the tax all over again.
GGGRRRR RANT OVER LOL :rotfl::rotfl:
Sorry I'm a bit out of touch with this, what is the £7 fee?
DVLA say,
"The amount you’ll be refunded
A refund is paid for each full month left to run on the tax disc at the time you apply. For example, if your tax disc expires at the end of September and you apply during July you'll receive a refund for two months – August and September."0 -

My bad, thats if you dont have a tax disk to send back when SORNing your car.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

I normally do just that as I frequently change my car, normally once a year (because I get bored of it lol) but the last car I have had for a while and had no plans to change so didn't worry about charges for changing etc this year, which is typical as half way through the policy itchy feet set in and i wanted to change lol.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

Do you mean if I buy a vehicle from a dealer without a current tax disc, trailer it away, it would cost me £7 to declare it Sorn?0 -
