Do you mean if I buy a vehicle from a dealer without a current tax disc, trailer it away, it would cost me £7 to declare it Sorn?

no bob you only pay £7 if the tax disc was yours to cash ,in but you cant produce it for any reason
nothing to do with sorn in the bigger picture

I normally do just that as I frequently change my car, normally once a year (because I get bored of it lol) but the last car I have had for a while and had no plans to change so didn't worry about charges for changing etc this year, which is typical as half way through the policy itchy feet set in and i wanted to change lol.

If your paying out money for a new car it isn't so much of an issue.

It is a real pain when you want to add someone, or do a minor change as Sally A said they are after clean policies and stuff you for minor items.

Wonder how long it will be before you can just update online like telephone banking?

    DVLA say,

    "The amount you’ll be refunded
A refund is paid for each full month left to run on the tax disc at the time you apply. For example, if your tax disc expires at the end of September and you apply during July you'll receive a refund for two months – August and September."

That's if they can bother to process it quickly enough. The last one I had only had a full month left I sent back on the 6th of preceding month, first class, waited.

Simply got a letter mid way through full month saying tough.

I know I am a cheapskate but it is the principal.:p

  • you watch they'll rise VED again in accordance to this being implemented, so not only do we get fined we have to pay more for VED to put the car back on the road. theyll put a £15 fee for sorning then charge to have it lifted, insurers will increase their premiums because the legislation is a good opertunity to squeeze the living daylights out our pockets, discounts will be a thing of the past online, and no claim bonus's will be obsolite, we'll all have to have trackers fitted by insurance companies we'll have to declaire working times to them and pay a fee for not being charged while commuting leaving early will be a no no and heaven forbid there be a traffic jam or accident on the way home because you will have to pay extra regardless if your within peak times and out of your agreed time scale, we'll be limited to 3 accident claims in five years with any insurer then we'll have to pay a high risk premium.

with that the goverment will intoduce a new licensing law that anyone who has 3 acidents in 5 years has their license revoked untill they attend a drivers education awarness course out of our own pocket to one of thier DVLA test centres. anyone who has 3 withing one year (at fault) is automatically banned has to retake theory and prac. they will increase minor offences like no seat belt from £60 to £90 and 3 points, all this for the motorist, but when it come to those who just dont care if they have a license or not and continue to drive anyway will go to court have £30 fine told not to do it again as the prisons are full and its quicker to process through the courts repeat offenders on benefits them taken away for the month half if you have three children.

ontop of that when we buy our overly stupidly priced VED we will also have to pay a fixed congestion fee in order to travel into towns and cities up and down the UK of £120 per year £60 6 month.

rant oover BUT IT MAY HAPPEN never know with governments.

Forget all this nonsense about continuous car insurance, assume that any driver without insurance has *already* caused an accident with £10,000 worth of damage.

    Make the !!!!!!s pay.

And then send the bailiffs around to the house to take £10,000 worth of stuff out of their houses. If it leaves them sitting on boxes, so be it.

If they don't have that, keep hounding them until they've paid. Send the bills to debt collection agencies.

In other words, treat the pondlife as the errant parkers on private land are treated.

I don't disagree but they those who choose not to abide by the law still have civil rights and are still protected whilst the law abiding people are the ones treated like criminals and have to pay the cost to clean up after them.

Like I said if the SORN system was to be updated and brought inline with this new insurance [STRIKE]scam[/STRIKE] system it wouldn't be so bad. I still think they should scrap VED altogether whilst they make a lot of money from it, it also costs a fortune to police and manage and all these paper tax discs aren't exactly environmentally friendly are they.

Its really not that simple though, some people use there cars for work. I for one could not work what so ever without the car so selling the car first isn't an option. Buying a car then selling your old one is fine if you have the capital to do that, but again if you are buying from a seller who is still using the car and it has tax etc on it then you are still going to have to trade the tax in and SORN it.

Also would you want to buy a new car and have it sat there for a week, two weeks even a month whilst trying to sell your old car.....I think not.
It's not a question of what you want to do, it's a question of what you will now have to do.
    You either
    • Sell your old car as part of a part exchange
    • Sell your old one to a dealer
    • Sell your old one at auction
    • Sell your old one off road with no road tax and no test drives for buyers, and they can only trailer it away immediately or they can drive it away with insurance, without roadtax but that's their risk not yours.
    • Sell your old one whilst you have the new one ready in waiting off road for swapping over
    • Sell your old one and then quickly over the weekend buy your new one - with ref to this last one, you can ask the buyer to delay picking it up but it is a risky strategy.

    • Sell your old car as part of a part exchange Lower price received
    • Sell your old one to a dealer Lower price received
    • Sell your old one at auction Even lower price received

    • Sell your old one whilst you have the new one ready in waiting off road for swapping over Should still receive a decent price for your car but you will need the funds to purchase the new car without the sale of yours (no different to now I know). If you can't leave the car say with the dealer until yours is sold you will have to pay for tax and insurance then have to SORN the car losing money on the tax.

SO yet again the only people to benefit will be the dealers, remind you of the scrappage scheme??. You will get a lower price for your car for all those options you have stated except for selling before buying a new one. Once you have sold your car you are then limited to only buying from within a reasonable distance unless you have access to another car to be able to go and view it.

Its going to end up with buyers being in a chain like house buying lol, you can't have my car until I have found a new one.

As I said before the idea in principle is fine but the way SORN is carried out is outdated and needs to brought inline so you can still move the car off road but for tax to remain if the owner wants to sell it say. The only people to benefit are going to be the government from all the tax disks where you will be short changed and the dealers (those that take the !!!!) who will start offering even lower trade prices.

On the upside though, if you have time on your hands and you can wait for insurance docs to come through etc used car prices may fall.

Whats the law regarding MOTing a car without tax or insurance as if you have no MOT you can't tax the car, if it hasn't got tax its not supposed to be on the road and will be classed as SORN.??

if you have a banger scrap it send tax back and declaire destroyed. not going to be worth much P/X so may aswell do what others have done and weigh it in get a destruction notice.

You can drive a car to a NEAR MOT station without tax - the vehicle must be booked in (and yes Plod will check), you should not stop on the way, as this breaks the direct journey, you may also drive it home if it fails, and then park it off road. It must be insured though.

So yes, another complication for those trying to be legal.

If you have no insurance, some garages will collect, so the insurance would be on their Motor Trade insurance.
