I plan on trying my original idea first, keeping the disk & getting temporary insurance, the 4x4 is now SORN now so Ill see how i get on next time im out in it.... could be weeks though.

I'd be willing to bet that the insurance will ask about the tax situation of the vehicle. you can either lie and say it is taxed in which your insurance will be invalid or you tell them the truth and they will probably refuse to insure you.

I absolutely agree all this is purely about making money!!!

Out of curiosty has anyone seen this new law advertised anywhere other than the news of online news sites? I.e I haven't heard a single radio or TV advert publicising it at all. I may of course missed them hence the question.

its been on the telly/adverts virtually everyday for the last couple of weeks;)

He could eaily deny all knowledge of the "clone".

1 - Ok yes he would need to put me on his insurance, nothing wrong with that.
2- Dont need documents to get number plates.... your suposed to but very easy without. I got for my daily car when one broke without any ID or anything.
3- dont need tax, even without a tax disk shown it would come up on ANPR as ok/taxed.
4(A) - risk of accident when used at 8 times a year is very, very small
4(B) - speeding... very unlikely. its an old 4x4 that struggles to do 40mph.

I do agree that blan B is stupid but I refuse to be forced into paying for an annual policy... Thats my point. It forces a lot of genuine motorists into braking the law... im not the only one that will end up having to find some way around it.

The point made about both vehicles being stopped at the same time/caught on ANPR... His 4x4 is like mine, used very few times a year, the only reason he has annual insurance is because he is older & has about 10 years NCB on it, £80 a year I think.

Looking at plan B and the points made, I agree, I dont want to do it and I will only be doing this as a very last resort.... I believe the chance of getting caught doing plan B is actually very slim... Whereas if I leave it taxed & not insured in my garage, the change of getting an automated letter with a £100 fine is actually very high.

If your friend only uses his 4x4 a few times a year then why not ask him to share vehicles?

Thats a nice idea but not practicle... Is a shame though but until the government start telling us where to live its not going to work... we stay about 30 miles apart & work in different areas.

    On another point however...

It looks like I may get to see what happens now that the 4x4 is SORN sooner rather than later.

My washing machine decided to stop working this morning... big bang, lots of smoke.... not fun.

So im off to get temporary car insurance tomorrow, take the trailer, dump the old one & head to Currys to pickup a new one.... Will be interesting to see if im stopped now that the 4x4 is SORN but I still have the tax on the window (Unill December).

Cameras don't look at the disc, they check the DVLA website. Wouldn't it be safer to get Currys to take it away.

I have other rubbish to take to the skip too, currys wont take that.

Im basically just doing as I have done for the past 2 years, just getting temporary insurance when I need to use the vehicle but under this new law I had to SORN it or risk getting a letter/fine because it was uninsured... even though It sits in a garage gathering dust most of the time.

Anyway, I will see how i get on today. I havent cashed in the tax so I have paid to use the vehicle on the road, I now have 2 days insurance & It is MOT'd so Im hoping theres not going to be any problems.... I will find out soon.

Thats what really annoys me about this new law, Its good to get uninsured drivers off the road but they way they implemented it will force law abiding road users in situations very similar to me into "bending" the law.

Good Luck on your mission michael.d :cool:

You will probably get away with it, but a naughty bit of me wants you to get stopped just to put this ridiculous DVLA ruling to the test.

Let us know when you get back safe.

As far as I can see:

-SORN does not cancel the Vehicle Licence which is for the payment of Vehicle Excise Duty
-SORN does not insist the Vehicle Licence is returned
-the Vehicle Licence is the paper one you surrender, not the electronic record held by DVLA.
