My Big Plan to lose some weight with Type 2 Diabetes

I just wanted to say, if any of you with type 2 diabetes find it is progressing quickly, and you keep having to have the tablets increased, or you are under 40 and not overweight, or have unexplained weight loss, please insist on being tested for type 1 diabetes.
It is possible to get type 1 diabetes as an adult and if you do it does progress slowly, and tablets for type 2 diabetes will work at the start, so it can appear identical to type 2 diabetes.
I wish I had known this earlier, it would have saved me months/years of high blood sugars.
GPs are not always aware of this: I saw 3 GPs over the course of ~5 years for my 'type 2' diabetes, it was only when I insisted on seeing someone who actually knew what they were talking about, an endocrinologist, that I was tested for type 1 diabetes, the tests were positive.

What do you drink?
I for now only drink water and plenty of it, I have never drunk tea or coffee, but did use to drink loads of fruit juice and squash, all of that for now I have given up. (hidden sugars)
Since the end of Jan, apart from water, I have drunk, 2 small glasses of blackcurrent squash as a funeral wake, and 1 small glass of white wine at a friend's 40th bithday day party, and I left the buffet table well alone in both cases!!!.
I use to think, it was good to drink just fruit juice and squash, as I wasn't adding spoon full of sugar to drinks!, my view has now changed.Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100 / 100miles

I drink mainly tea up to 8 mugs a day as quite often have it made for me at work, no sugar although cut down on amount of tea drank and as still thirsty have replaced with weak squash.
I'm not really keen on fruit juice as can make me gag a bit. I've always had a weak stomach and if I have any cold or any illness I always struggle to keep food in.
Right now I've picked up a bug, sore throat (although eased now) and ache all over. Went to tesco to buy some ham and I was sick in the toilets. Am ok now I think. Bf is making me a ham salad sandwich.
I am 38 btw0 -
Are you sure these are a good idea? Both are very high in easily absorbed sugar. They would both send my blood sugar sky high!
I know, I need to be strict with myself. In the afternoon I was in hospital visiting a friend who has just had a heart attack (real shock) and I realised it could happen to anyone. I grabbed the bar as it was the healthiest thing there which is poor for a hospital, as was feeling dizzy from the heat.0 -

Hospital shops are usually hopeless for healthy eaters! If you're lucky, you'll get a couple of apples in ours, otherwise it's all chocolate bars, crisps, fizzy drinks, and so on.0 -
In your leaflets, what does it say about the level of fat in your diet? I notice cheese features a lot in your meals - and while I know it is very yummy it's nott he healthiest addition to meals.;)
( Oh and yes, i do wish I would follow all my own advice, I 'd be a size 10 no bother then:rotfl:)Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Just to say reading this thread has really hit a chord with me. I've gained a bit of weight lately from a base of already being overweight. Have always been worried about ending up with diabetes and your thread has reminded me that it really does happen to people. So you've delivered a kick up the bum to me anyway, thank you.
Also just to say, you need to be realistic about your eating. I can say this simply because I'm the same - it's very very easy to underestimate the amount that you're eating (and drinking) and the amount of calories you're taking in, but the scales and the tightness of your clothes never ever lie IMHO. So no matter how much I kid myself that I'm not eating too much and only having a little of whatever, if I'm gaining weight I know it can't be true. I promise I'm not saying this to get at you, just passing on something that I have personally had to admit after 20 years of gaining and losing weight. It's worth thinking about
Good luck!!0 -
Monday weigh in loss this week is 2.5lbs, so pleased with that. (updated signature)
Food diary all upto date, everything is written down that I eat.
Tonight plan is to walk 3 miles in 40mins. I know I can do 2 miles in 27.5 mins and repeat at least 4 times this week, with a slower walk at other times.
No trips planned to the dr or nurse this week, unless I feel the need to.
Silver cat good luck to you this week as well.Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100 / 100miles

Hi Belfast girl. I have to admit this has been a massive shock to me. I've beeen in denial about my weight for so long and I do understand what I have done to myself.
My aim now is to improve my diet first for the diabetes then look at how I can lose the weight with the new eating plan tied in with the gym.
I have a membership, costs a fortune each month but I've not used it since may last year. not very MSE!
Kazwookie - great to hear about your progress. I think we just have to remember its a slow progress one but so amazing when you can see the results.
Ailuro2 - cheese is probably my biggest weakness and I have a list of food to avoid and food to have little of but I will be mainly going through my diet with the dietician tomorrow. I'm feeling quite positive about that. The main thing for me is learning what is good and bad. If you've never had to think about it before then I don't think knowing what is good and bad is as simple as that. I though fruit juices were ok but thinking about it the sugar content is high. Obvious when you know but for me this is brand new!0
