Silvercat, I'm glad you had a good session with your GP/nurse. They are the key people who can help you. You were given a lot of info - inevitably some of it won't have gone in and will need to be repeated. I repeat my suggestion to contact DiabetesUK. With the number of new people being diagnosed Type 2 every week, and the numbers who are walking around undiagnosed, they are very concerned about our present lifestyle and dietary habits. I watched a BBC3 programme this week called 'Fast Food Baby' - there are small children who have never, since coming off milk feeds, eaten anything other than fast food of one kind or another! Part of the reason for this is that it tends to be 'finger food' which is a stage that babies need to go through when discovering other foods than milk, but there were dire warnings there about the likely development of obesity, diabetes, and a raft of other nasties.
Diabetes UK actually run weekends - we've been on 2 of them - which are very helpful especially for people who've been newly-diagnosed and even for people like DH who was diagnosed in 1981 but likes to keep up to date and learn about new discoveries and developments. It was there that I first heard about pre-diabetes. I've heard of so many older women who were diagnosed with diabetes around my age and quite honestly, I have other problems, it is something I can do without. So I am doing my darndest to lose weight and my exercise is my twice-weekly swimming lessons, swimming practice and 'stretch and tone' in the local WI hall.
One thing I have done is to kick into touch all breakfast cereals because most of them are full of sugar, even the so-called 'slimming' ones like Special K. Porridge is the one exception, because it releases its energy slowly - low GI - and doesn't contain sugar unless you add it. I find I need some protein to start the day. Today, for instance, we've had half a grapefruit each, a boiled egg, a slice of wholemeal toast.
Best wishesÆr ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

Day 5 - Saurday
Breakfast - fruitjuice (didn't feel well so was all could manage)
Lunch - chcken and basil salad with parmassan and dressing. The dressing was in a little bowl so only had a little bit as found it too rich tasting. The basil taste on the salad was too nice too drown with cheese and dressing anyway. Surprised by how nice it was!
Snack - muesly raspberry bar
Tea - pork (not beef) cubes on kebab sticks & rice with peppers, sweetcorn and mushrooms added
Exercise - pushed grandmother in heavy wheelchair all around town - about 3 hours worth (was knackered after)!0 -
I went grocery shopping today and was a bit shocked at the price of "healthy" options so a bit of MSE help definately needed.
What I bought - 3 cartons of fresh soup for lunches, wholemeal pitta to go with soup, fruit, yoghurts (natural), rice, pepper, onion, mushrooms, orange and pineapple juice, lean mince and kidney beans for chilli. We fry the mince to get any further fat off before cooking the mince - amazing how much comes out of it!
Tonights meal will be lean beef cubes on kebab sticks & rice with peppers, sweetcorn and mushrooms added.0 -
Sites recommended to look at by posters here. Looked at all but still loads of info to go through so but listed here as a reminder and hopefully for others.

Hi,
Just wanted to wish you luck on your journey!! I wrote a similar post last September, I was 12 stone 8, felt huge and hated myself and the way I looked. I reached my target weight in Febuary doing the dukan diet and it has changed the way I eat, I was carb mad and never felt full and was always grazing all day. Now I eat three protein heavy meals a day and snack on fruit and I am now under my 10 stone goal and feel and look amazing!
Keep plodding on but get support from somewhere
good luckSober and Fabulous 4/1/10
Maintaing 10 stone since 22/3/110 -
Had cheese salad for dinner tonight, no mayo or similar it was nice, plus an apple.
Spent the day doing house work / gardening /car washing / planting out plants etc.
Monday is my weigh in day, as it suits me......
My body seems happy with my adjustment in my tablets for my type 2 that the Dr made this week, so that is good.Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100 / 100miles

Hi Margaret, I have been given their details in a fact sheet of info from my doctor. He said they organise events just like you also mentioned so I am going to look for these in Bedfordshire / Buckinghamshire area.
Will update you on progress.0 -

Are you sure these are a good idea? Both are very high in easily absorbed sugar. They would both send my blood sugar sky high!0
