    thanks, have replied.

One thing I have realised is the amount of people going through similar, from the replies and PM's I am receiving, let alone other forums I have read from googling.

If at least I can make people aware of what can happen, then this thread has done some good.

I honesty never ever thought my living style could cause something like this and although this may not be the case for all there is no doubt it has contributed to my diabetes,

But that's just the point! Type II diabetes is now being called a 'lifestyle disease', there's mention of a 'diabetes epidemic', and it is ALL down to the modern lifestyle - overeating, eating the wrong things, being too sedentary, the whole lot. Genetics can be a factor too, but in families where this has never surfaced before then usually it's down to lifestyle.

When DH was diagnosed back in 1981 he'd had diabetes coming down both sides of his family, so in that sense it wasn't a surprise. He'd been a very fit young bloke doing a few different types of sport, but in mid-life he was on the road a lot, hours and hours behind a wheel, business lunches, eating and drinking as and when he could and usually the wrong things. He made a lifestyle change 'overnight' as he puts it. How he did that I don't know, I wasn't there. But he made it his business to learn as much as he could about it and even now, keeps up to date with all the new developments.

I heard about 'pre-diabetes' and I was determined to avoid this, because I have other problems and it's something I can do without. Too many older women develop this - why do they? I needed to lose weight because of other medical problems and I've actually gone down from size 22 at the time of our marriage in 2002, to size 16 now, and I'm still losing albeit slowly.

Today I have got the dieticians appointment. Also getting the freezer any day now when collected.
The bug has gone and although I was a bit rubbish first thing that may be as I wanted to stay in bed rather than a being ill thing!
I have got my lunch which I bought last night rather than rely on the lunch run as I am just not getting what I asked for as they can't find them which is fair enough. This way I don't get crisps bought for me and takes the temptation away. Probably works out cheaper too as I can look for the bargains.

One message I have had is about getting the motivation and i agree this is really hard to change a way of living but the truth is if I don't do this then who knows what situation my health will be this time next year if not sooner.

Thanks for all the supportive messages, they really do help. I also have a ew friends who also will come to the gym with me so I am also getting support from friends which is lovely. Its a difficult thing to admit what you have done. I found it easier writing it on here than actually admitting it to friends but I'm glad I have done so now.

Anyway, back to work, got a busy one today.

Hi there, I have just come across this thread and have read with interest. You seem to be doing well with your changes in diet and you are obviously going to be given some more information and tips later on at the dietitian. One thing that struck me so far is that you do eat an awful lot of carbs. There is a very small amount of veg in your evening meal. Really, if you imagine your plate divided into thirds, 2/3 of it should be vegetables and the 1/3 should be able to house your carbs and protein.

You were asking for some MSE advice for your new meal plans, well, you're in the right place for that! Obviously, when you get your freezer, you'll be able to significantly reduce your costs with making your own soup. I would recommend that you try to keep a bag of frozen veg in the freezer for those nights when you are struggling. They only cost a £1ish for a good large bag and they won't go off in the freezer.
You'll get there in the end hopefully, good luck :)

Hi Kaz, yes I know my eating habits are dire and its knowing the right's and wrong and not just adding more bad habits.

The dietician appointment went really well plus she has given me a free membership to weightwatchers to call them tomorrow. Apparently they don't refer to slimming world here but am greatful for the free membership to weightwatchers.

Anyone else here go to those? and if yes, how did you get on with them?

Silver-Cat I'm doing weightwatchers online, it was the end of my 4th week yesterday, I've lost 10 1/2 lbs so far, so I'm very pleased with it. Most fruit and veg is freely available, apart from high carb ones like parsnips, potatoes etc, but it's working out fine for me, still eat well and have a bit left over for a little treat. You get extra points to eat if you exercise enough too.:D

Oh Silver-Cat, I do hope I didn't offend you. I'd be mortified if I had :(. I was trying to offer some encouragement :o.
Glad you have been offered a free membership to WW, I hope it works out for you.
What you need to remember at the moment is how far you have come already. If the road ahead looks too hard, take a look back over your shoulder to remind yourself how far you've come and how much of that was easy going. You'll then be spurred on by your success so far.
ailuro2, well done on the 10 1/2 lbs. That's good for 4 weeks.

Good luck all of you needing to lose weight :)

Kaz2904 - You definately did not offend me!
All the encouragment including yours is helping.

Coming to terms to reality is always a shock and I accept that which is why the comments on here are useful.
I know to look into things first but its always great to hear from other peoples experiences and also recognising that type 2 diabetes and pre diabetes is a real risk for women and men like myself who generally don't realise what their lifestyle is doing to them.

If someone reads this and is gaining a bit of weight and realises their eating is a bit rubbish and they are not exercising much then maybe this thread will make them realise it can happen to anyone and hopefully prevent it happening to them.
Also for the many who read but don't post, and i used to be one of those, who are going through the same if they can see progress then this hopefully gives them encouragment that they can get better / healthier.

I got myself properly weighed and measured at the dietician appointment yesterday and found I had my weight wrong so its a bit less so either I've lost a bit in a few weeks (have been a bit unwell so possible) or I wore too heavy clothes the first time :p

Our weight fluctuates naturally day to day, week to week, between morning and evening, depending on food in transit, fluid retention, as well as clothes you're wearing. The best and most accurate way of weighing is to get a decent set of scales, modern, digital preferably, set them on a hard surface and weigh yourself first thing in the morning, naked, after going to the loo and before eating or drinking anything.
