Surely cleared funds being taken from your account without your permission is theft and should be reported to the police!!!!
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.

Your best bet now is to make a formal complaint, taking it to the Financial Ombudsman if necessary. Other than that try and put it behind you, you have the money back so don't let the stress get to you.

I have just been reading this thread and whilst there are a number of unhelpful posts it is those who have advised you to complain who IMO have it right - follow the bank's procedure and advise them of every expense incurred due to their actions. Whether they agree they were wrong or otherwise to do it is a moot point but they should agree that their actions have made you incur out of pocket expenses for which they should be held responsible.

If you get no joy from Barclays then take it to the financial ombudsman - its what they are there for. If you really felt as low as you have said you did, its the least you can do to at least force a policy review somewhere to prevent others going through the same.

It may not necessarily take that long, and whatever costs you incur should be reimbursed to you and any damage to your credit rating reversed. You should advise whoever has charged you for late payment what the situation is and that you are in the midst of a formal complaint on the matter.

It must feel like its never going to get sorted out but it will.

If the bank was acting on behalf of and on instruction of SOCA, they are not liable for any costs, as Barlcays are complying with the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. I have seen FOS case studies that have similar circumstances, and in some of them FOS agreed with the firm re their handling of the case.
    Best Regards

Take your point, but until its established why the money was removed in the first place I still think they should reimburse any out of pocket expenses - or at least advise in the complaint response why not

The OP has done the right think in logging a complaint with Barclays but i wouldn't hold out much hope of an explanation about what was done, Barclays won't be allowed to declare this information to their customer. They might offer out of pocket expenses as a gesture of goodwill but as ZPPP says, they probably haven't done anything procedurally wrong, i know the OP is incensed about what happened, but no amount of complaining will change things now, it's happened and they're doing the right thing by making a complaint, Barclays will respond, if the OP isn't happy with their response then he needs to make a decision as to whether to take it further.
