So picture the situation, I'm on the single carriageways, about half an hour from the hotel, it's 9:30, if I don't get there for 10 I don't get to eat at all tonight.

Then I end up behind Gerald McCodger in his Rover 214Si doing 50 in a 60, and slowing to about 25 for every single corner.

There's some chevrons ahead, with broken right lines.

Is it necessary for me to overtake?

It would depend on whether your car has cameras or not...

^^ "all and sundry"? I just see people ganging together whether they agree or not, it's the pack mentality of the weak mind. It's interesting and quite indicative of our indoctrinated society driven by popular (but often incorrect) opinion and the media

Anyway (added for the benefit of confused mikey) - Re: the overtaking comments above

Just found the sentiment of "I'm hungry so the world must move out of my way / let me overtake them in dangerous areas" amusing.

I don't, and never did, overtake on dangerous areas, but I would overtake on hatched areas with broken borders when safe to do so.

It wasn't a case of just being hungry, it was literally the difference between being able to eat that night or not.

The regular occurrence of that situation is one of the many reasons I resigned from that job at the first opportunity. I was expected to live the lifestyle of a sales rep, constantly on the road paying for everything and claiming it back, but was only being paid 15 grand a year.

We're getting even more off topic now though.. Care to post your definition of "necessary"

    Strider does 180.5 yards in 6.57 seconds. (197 video frames @ 30fps)

That's an average speed of 56.20mph (in a 40mph zone)

    See http://goo.gl/maps/YLXH .. It's the A4536 at Hindlip Hill.

I believe the generally accepted definition of the word in that context is to pass vehicles that are not capable of travelling above a certain speed - tractors, moped riders, cyclists, etc.

What's the difference between a moped stuck doing 30mph and an old fart in a Ford Focus, Kia Picanto, Suzuki Wagon-R, Renault Modus, etc, incapable of doing more than 30mph??

Because they know that if the human body travels at more than 30mph it will melt, says so right here

And please bare in mind this before inserting smart a55 comments :p

Such markings are usually placed on roads with restricted visibility or other hazards that make overtaking more dangerous than usual - if I were coming the other way or waiting to pull out of a junction I'd be a lot more likely to expect you to overtake a tractor than an old fart in a Focus.

EDIT - I don't see any hatched markings in that picture :p
