I've seen a few posts on here where someone says larger instead of lager.0

If the above re spelling is true then I'm even more determined to send my kids (as and when we have them) to private school.
My friend's experience of private school was worse. The teachers weren't bothered about the fact the child was strugging to read.
Yup
No sports because competition is wrong.
Rewarding children who truant when they turn up in school.

My 11 year old niece constantly writes 'I'm board' on facebook. I'm always tempted to say 'if you're that bored, go and do your spellings!'.

Each week, my eight year old is given ten words. She then has to learn their spelling and create a sentence for each word to show she understands its meaning.
Last week, she brought home ten homophones, words which sound the same but are spelled differently.
She has lessons in French which I didn't start until I reached 11.

Why does your eleven year old niece have a Facebook account?
People blaming the education system for bad spelling should look a little closer to home.
Parents have responsibilities.Been away for a while.0 -

I've seen a friend on Facebook correcting their childrens' spelling by commenting on their statuses. Can't do anything for their street cred. :rotfl:
As for the comment re 11 year olds having Facebook accounts, we got our first PC when I was 11 (an IBM 486 with a 70Mb hard drive) and had the internet when I was about 14. I was soon a geek and regularly chatting on Usenet groups. Didn't stop me doing well at school.0 -

As I said, she's my niece - not my daughter. Not really my place to enforce my own views and opinions on my sister on how she brings up her kids. They play adult games on PS-whatevers too. Any kids of mine wouldn't, and they wouldn't be on FB. But that's my opinion.
Also agree that it's not necessarily the education system. My husband works at my twin nieces' school and I know he can spell (far better than me!), as can the other teachers. On the other hand, my sister's spelling is horrendous, as is my mum's. Won't get started on my dad's... Sis and I went to the same school, even had some of the same teachers. Some of us retain info like that, others don't (or can't). If the parents are being made aware of the problem, they really should try to help (and would probably learn too!).

There's a hot-food van that I see regularly which offers;
Kebabs
Pizza's
Curry's
Pakora's
Can you spot the logic......?
The logic is that they've used an apostrophe if the word they're pluralising ends in a vowel (and in this case they've included "y" as a vowel). This used to be considered correct before the 19th century, apparently, and it's still done in Dutch.0
