There have been a few threads in the last couple of days where people are using the word 'brought' instead of 'bought' - and it's really starting to wind me up.

Posters - you BOUGHT a property, you BROUGHT your problem to our attention for some advice. If you can't remember the right word, just use 'PURCHASED' instead.

    I thank you.

Each week, my eight year old is given ten words. She then has to learn their spelling and create a sentence for each word to show she understands its meaning.

Last week, she brought home ten homophones, words which sound the same but are spelled differently.

She has lessons in French which I didn't start until I reached 11.

    Education isn't dead. Yet.
    ;)

My 6-year-old (almost 7) is also learning French as well as recorder and piano. He recently by himself came up with a list of over 30 pairs of homophones as part of a challenge set by his teacher. His spelling is fantastic, and he works out sums such as "double 768" way faster than I can. All of this is largely down to superb teaching. I grew up on the Continent and had barely even started school at the same age (although I don't believe that it makes a huge difference in the long run whether you start at age 4 or 6).

But, what's clear to me in this country more than anywhere else I've experienced, is the huge difference from one school to another. In a good private school, my son is already gaining a tremendous advantage versus his local friends in the state schools (which are generally very good around here). He may as well be on another planet compared with children in poorly performing schools. Basically I find this incredibly unfair (especially coming from a country where private education was pretty much unheard of) - and yet I help maintain the system by paying for the best possible education for my children. To DH and me, this is the single most important expense, and if it meant having to compromise on housing etc, so be it (fortunately we haven't had to so far, touch wood).

So yes, excellent education is still available, but not to everyone, unfortunately.

Unfortunately if "people like" the OP were reading CVs for job recruitment, yours would probably not get past first base.

If you have dyslexia then that's another matter, although there are spell checkers which would iron out most of your errors, but laziness (no punctuation) and carelessness won't help you get on in the world.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

    I before E except after C.

Although scientists would be inclined to disagree.

Yes - because there are more words in the English language which are 'cie' than 'cei'. Thankfully I don't believe it's taught anymore.

My current niggle is "Five items or less". I want to scream "fewer!"

Ooooh, 'less' and 'fewer' are my bugbears, too.

Another one is 'definitely'. There is no 'a' in 'definitely'. Never has been.

And one last one: apostrophes for non-possessive plurals, simply because they end in a vowel. Like: 'beds and sofa's for sale' or, worse, those that end in numbers: '1980's'.

What annoys me isn't just the misuse of the apostrophe, but that logic should tell you they are both plurals, so why use an apostrophe for one but not the other?

(Oh, and it's similar 'to' and different 'from'. And don't place semi-colons in sentences randomly; it's not a good look.)

I feel so much better now. :D

    ;)

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

Another I hate is the signs in Boots that say "Save up to half price". I don't know if this is grammatically incorrect or not but it simply sounds wrong. Surely "Save up to 50%" or "Up to half price"?

    It's not criticism.

If people repeatedly mis-spell a word or words, then those who don't know that it's mis-spelt won't realise unless some grammer geek points it out. I'd rather have the grammar geek step in than have to read about the 'breaks' on a car.....

You don't have to be 'no good' at spelling for all your days. Why couldn't you 'get a life' by signing up for a further education class to improve it?
