I suppose it could be worse - when I first had the implant in I bled for three weeks stopped for four days and then started again for two weeks. Went on like that for a few months.

    Oh crikey! That sounds horrid!

Thankfully, I've been fortunate in that I've had one 29 day cycle, followed by 2 (or 3? I forget now) 27 day cycles since I dropped the pill. But everyone is different and experiences wary.

I was expecting so much worse as I was put on the pill at 13 because I was bleeding for 8 days, and only stopped for 7 days before the cycle repeated! Not to mention it was a hell of a lot more painful then too.

We have the opposite problem. OH has always been around babies (in fact he, alone, had his sister's baby every weekend for a year so she could work - before I met him) and is FAB with them, and I'm the terrified one that hates being passed the baby in case it cries (they sense my fear!). But at the same time I love them and if I had one 24/7 I know I'd get used to it and not look at it like a ticking time bomb. I'm mostly afraid of being the dumb newbie that OH is forever correcting... he's so irritating when he knows more than me about something! :rotfl:
Have any of you given any thought to what your long term plans may be in terms of work and kids?
I'll be going back near enough full-time, but I WILL be taking at least 9 months off, 12 if I get some money saved. My work is so flexible about parents that I can pretty much make my hours up. I plan to work 2 shifts in the week and then every other weekend, giving me every other weekend free with OH and bubs, whilst minimising time spent in daycare. Because they're 12 hours shifts, I only have to average 3 a week to bring it to full time hours, but I have to work some weekends. We have subsidised childcare at OH's work for the 2 weekdays bubs will be there and it'll cost us £190 a month. :j

I believe the official advice is to start taking it at least 3 months before pregnancy, so I would say 3 months before starting TTC, which makes it start of September.

But, I believe you could start taking earlier if you wish.

Here is a link to the NHS site: http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/pregnancy/Pages/Folicacid.aspx

Although, it says there to start taking it as soon as you stop using contraception. I don't thinkl that taking it earlier than that will harm you, but please check with your doctor if you are unsure.

Also, a link to a pamphlet about folic acid: http://www.dh.gov.uk/prod_consum_dh/groups/dh_digitalassets/@dh/@en/documents/digitalasset/dh_4081397.pdf

    I hope that helps :)

For those interested, THIS is the exact info my GP gave me... it was just in pretty colour leaflet form:

    http://www.patient.co.uk/health/Pregnancy-Planning-to-Become-Pregnant?.htm

I found it a good read, but then I was clueless to start off with! I found the caffeine levels and the foods I couldn't eat useful.

I guess I should think about starting on Folic Acid in the next few months or so. And check my Rubella immunisation. I'm sure I have my immunisation card around somewhere!
They will check you in early pregnancy to see if you have the immunity. Some docs will do it in advance if you tell them about TTC, mine never has though, but I know I had the MMR jab, and I'm not convinced I didn't have a seperate Rubella jab when I was 11ish?

Folic acid also helps the body absorb and use Iron properly (as does Vitamin C btw) so if you have anaemia, or heavy periods, or anything like that it's a really good thing to take anyway :) Normal RDA is 200mg, but in TTC and pregnancy it's 400mg. In some pregnancies doctors recommend a higher dose still.

There is actually advice out there that all women of childbearing age should take Folic Acid routinely (the benefits are that great).

I'd be incredibly shocked to hear of anyone having a bad reaction to FA, short of some weird and wonderful (and rare!) health condition. :)

    Hello, can i join? :hello:

What a great idea for a thread. I did use to lurk on the TTC thread a long time ago, but didn't really feel qualified to post.

A bit about me.. I'm 39, and OH is 40, no kids. My body clock is ticking away.. very loudly now and I'm suriously starting to think about ttc. I've had trouble with the OH who's not 100% sure he wants kids (even tho he did when we first met!). We've been together over 10 years so it make it really difficult. I'm got some thinking to do as I don't want to miss my chance. :( I'm not sure I want to go down the ultimatum route, but not sure of my options. Maybe I'm not even qualified to post on this thread yet!!

Anyway, I'm coming to the end of a very stressful year long post grad course and need a long holiday to unwind (we havne't been had a decent holiday abroad for a couple of years due to one thing or another), so my wish would be to start ttc around oct/nov. In preparation (i live in hope!) I'm tracking my cycles, but thats all. I'm a fairly regular 28 dayer, with the odd 26,27 or 29. We don't use contraception but OH is careful.. well sometimes he's not which actually just makes the whole situation worse as I'm getting mixed messages. Hope you don't mind me joining in this thread considering my situation.

Of course you are - this thread is filled with women (and maybe read by men) who want a baby. I think you fall safely in that category :D

    Hi,
I went to the nurse today for a rubella jab and she said she had no knowledge of it being done in school for girls in their teanage years and kept telling me I would be covered from my MMR when I was a toddler - I am not sure MMR was around when I was little and my mum isn't either....anyway to cut a story short, she gave me an MMR and sent me on my way.
    I thought I was going mad:o

So now just need to monitor my cycle for the next few months and then start TTC. Like other posters I want to shout from the rooftops what we are doing (not literally;)) but keeping quiet until it happens so this forum is great...thankyou

Is anyone else absolutely terrified about the whole idea of ttcing or is it just me who is mad?
