hiya, just unlurking to let you know that you don't have to be working somewhere for a year to qualify for SMP. As long as you were working there when you fell pregnant you should qualify - you have to have been working there for 6 months (26 weeks) at the qualifying week, which is 15 weeks before the baby is due. https://www.gov.uk/statutory-maternity-pay/eligibility

hope all you ladies are getting on ok and the waiting isn't too hard, it was only this time last year I was posting on here, and our baby's due in 3 weeks

    Thanks for that hun.

AF is now 9 days late.......:o I last took a pregnancy test on Wednesday and still BFN but I think I am going slowly insane now.....never been this late! Got a few preggo symptoms too.

If I am not pregnant thats fine but I want my period to come!!!

Finding it really hard to fight the temptation to buy more tests.

Hi Miss Bolan, we're in the same position as you guys with regards to Uni. Except I'm the perpetual student still shirking the working world! :o I hope to finish next autumn but it's going to be so hard to wait until then. I thought of trying in the run up to completion but it's going to be a really stressful time. Am worried my stressing would be bad for a growing foetus.

Money's such a big issue, isn't it. Have you visited the debt-free wannabe section here? I got lots of help there with my debts a few years ago. If you happened to have mis-sold PPI on any loans or cards you could look into claiming that? Especially if your OH is a student it's not likely to have been bald for him. Just a thought :)

Chocoholic - I've just had my implant removed too. Well I guess over two weeks ago. I didn't have side effects but also still waiting for AF :)

  • Browneyedbazzi-glad to hear you have settled in to more of a routine now you are off the pill. Ive been on one type of contraceptive or another for over 12 years now (my doctor prescribed me the pill as a teenager to control terrible acne!) so I dread to think how it will feel to be on a 'natural' cycle again! (my skin will probably be awful!)

Hi kalama - wow life is busy for you! When are you coming back to the uk? I can't believe its nearly November, 2012 has flown by!

Chocoholic chic- how exciting for you that you are trying soon! I hope your normal cycle returns soon. Can I ask, what do you mean by 'temping' if things dont happen naturally?

Lilmissmup - anything different yet? I dont blame you for wanting to buy more tests, when my sister was TTC she bought loads, but only the ones from the pound shop or they'd have cost loads from boots etc!

Lara 44 - autumn does seem a long way away doesnt it! It's not an easy decision deciding when to ttc, as its always the 'what ifs' that go with it (I.e. What if it takes ages or what if it happens quickly!). Money is an issue, I've looked in to the ppi thing, but I only ever had it on a HSBC loan which it took out in 2010 so it's after the time I think. Me and husband are quite careful with money, but since we got together he has still been sorting out finances with his ex, so for our first 2 years together we gave her half his earnings so it set us back quite severly when we started life together, we have a more reasonable financial settlement now, but this coincided with my husband starting uni, so we are still not really financially ahead! Oh well, I may do another debt breakdown for the other board, I did one a few years ago, but got a lot of suggestions about reducing the maintanence my partner was paying but that wasnt really an option!

I hope you get back in a normal cycle soon now your implant has been removed!

I have had a lovely Saturday myself as I got to see my new nephew who I am currently a little obsessed with! I mentioned in an earlier post that my sisters were both expecting, well my little sister had her first baby a few weeks ago and it's my first nephew and he is absolutely 100% gorgeous! He is currently my baby fix and so today I went to see him and get my baby cuddles! Makes me broody, but also very happy as my little sister was so ready to be a mum and it took her 12 months to conceive and it's lovely to see her with him

Think AF is on its way as got some cramps and spotting!

    Bodies can be cruel sometimes!

Think I will be having a chat with OH about starting to TTC soon as tbh I am pretty gutted by this experience as much as it would be more practical to wait.

Did order more preg tests from Amazon too. Knew i should have waited!

  • lilmissup - sorry that its not the news you were hoping for, fingers crossed after speaking to your OH you can decide when the time is right to ttc.

Don't worry about the pregnancy tests, they have a long shelf life and I'm sure you'll use them :)

  • Can I join in?

My oh and I have been talking for a few months about wanting to start a family together and it would be great to have somewhere to chat about all the prep etc!

I've not long graduated from my masters and start paying back my career development loan in 2weeks :( luckily I've managed to get a part time, flexitime job from november to march so that will bring in extra money which I will use to save towards loan repayments and getting my credit card paid off (but will still earn under the threshold for my slc loan from my bsc). Money will be tighter from the start of the repayments but I am hoping to stop nannying and get a 'proper job' that uses my experience/degrees and brings in more money (I get £80 per week max nannying atm and it was always meant to be a gap filler!)

OH has no significant debts - credit card he had to buy some kit on and thats pretty much it. We obviously have the usual rent etc to cover but we have that sorted currently (as long as no major changes happen!)

We've started a 'baby fund' which we both pay £10 a week in to (we are at almost £300 already!) and luckily will get many things from friends and family (only things we are fussed about are the pram, which is already picked :P, and the car seat) but we need to wait a bit longer before starting to TTC!

Hopefully I'm posting in the right place!

  • Welcome Lushlifesaver - you're in the right place! It sounds like you have a plan and I think your 'baby fund' sounds really good. Do you have a time-scale in mind for when you'd like to TTC?
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!
  • Hi browneyedbazzi we are hoping to be in the position that we can start trying around February as we'd quite like a winter baby!

  • Hi lushlifesaver! Welcome to the group!

What was your masters in? Are you saving for your 'baby fund' and buying bits and bobs you might need for baby as well?

As me and my OH are still trying to find the right time financially to ttc I can't decide whether it makes sense to start accumulating bits and bobs of baby things, or whether to wait until we are actively ttc, what does everyone else think? Is anyone else gathering bits even if they are not actively ttc?

I am taking multivitamins with the recommended allowance of folic acid already, just because it does no harm!

Hope everyone is having a good Monday. I am having a problem with a pain in my abdomen/sides which I have been having on and off (mainly on!) since August. I've seen the doctor about it once already but she said i must have hurt myself without realising it. It was over a month ago though when I saw her and it's still here, so think I'll have to go back again (although I hate going to the doctors!). It's partly because I want to make sure I am in tip top health when we do start to ttc, and as this isn't going away I think I will
have to go back and see if she has any other suggestions!

  • Hi Miss Bolan :)
My masters is in Forensic Psychology (undergraduate was single honours psychology) so hoping to get a related job or a job in the criminal or health fields reasonably soonish - I'll feel bad giving notice to the family I'm nannying for as they want me to do it long term but it's just not financially viable for me to keep doing it too long!

We are saving in our baby fund and then keeping an eye out for all the different offers and how regularly offers on each product comes around. Although there's a couple of gorgeous nursery furniture sets going for about £300 from Mamas and Papas at the moment and we half joked about getting them and just stashing them in the spare room haha

Trying not to get too far ahead of ourselves - we have budgets and lists of everything drawn up though, everything from furniture and accessories to clothes! All part of the fun and excitement I guess :)
