WOW, just WOW. I am student too (part-time as I was working until August). And I don't know how you can cope with studying AND a young child!

And such ambition too: I really admire that. Once I'm finished with my PhD (nothing fancy, I promise!), my dream is to one day to a Physics degree through the OU. I just love studying :D

It's interesting what you said about childcare cost being £0. This is the reason my husband is using for us to have a baby asap: I can stay home with the baby and study (if I can sleep!). But I don't know if I could... :o

you'd be absolutely fine Hun. i've had to complete a 2000 word assignment before in 2 hrs, because i forgot about it on no sleep, LO didn't settle all night and i passed it. i just take each day as it comes, and try and stay as relaxed as possible. but the open university can be quiet flexible you can ask for extensions and things and they don't ask for a lot of work to be done each week,

i look after LO during the day and once he's tucked up in bed at around 7.30 i study till about 11ish on average every other night. if i cant sleep i may study later it all depends

    Hi guys,

Sorry I haven't been on for a while, been in and out of hospital of late. Me and OH have decided to postpone the treatment until I'm well enough to continue on with it. I will keep you posted with progress :)

OMG, you have no idea what an inspiration you are. And I am not saying this to be nice or flatter you. There is me, wallowing in self-pity because my husband had to go back to London. I'm sat on the sofa doing nothing, except thinking "woe is me". I have a paper to write and want to send a draft to my supervisor on Monday but I'm too lazy to do anything. And there you are, studying in the evenings, with a LO to care for and you soldier on. You are amazing!

Luckily, a PhD is pretty flexible too. No assignment, only deadlines for chapters and conference papers. I work on my own and visit the library from time to time (being a postgrad means I can borrow A LOT of books in one go :D ). And I can have Facetime meetings with my supervisor instead of going all the way to campus.

I'll have to be über-organised! But you have given me hope :)

Hi DomRavioli! I'm kind of new here, so I don't think we've met :)

I hope it's nothing too serious that you have :(

OK, I have learnt something new regarding parenting... What's all this malarchy made of "party bags" for children's birthday parties? :rotfl:

I hope I'm not offending anyone, but it's just so alien to me! What's wrong with inviting a few best friends around, have homemade cakes, buy a bag of sweets and a few bottles of fizzy drinks and spend the afternoon crafting with salt dough? :rotfl:

My neighbour told me she had a party for 19 kids for a girl's birthday and was wondering what to do for party bags! After querying the nature of the aforementioned "party bags", I asked her why she invited so many kids? Apparently, you have to otherwise the other kids' mothers would take umbrage and not be so nice at the school gate

I am never going to fit in with other mums if even primary school is full on politics and diplomacy :( And that will probably impact on my child too... Or was my neighbour just a bit melodramatic and over the top? Please reassure me...

    Oh dont get me started.

You do feel pressurised to do all this party stuff and with some mums its definitely a game of one upmanship :(.

Some Mums even used to bring party bags into nursery if it was their childs birthday that week! Its very nice of them to do but then it does make you feel bad that you havnt done it! Having kids and working and aranging birthdays is hard enough IMO without having to consider doing 'extras'.

What gets me is the nursery 'concerts' at christmas. I go because it would look bad if you didnt but I look at the kids dressed up as shepards staring into space and picking their nose, who havnt got a clue whats going on and think 'Am I the only one who finds this totally pointless and ridiculous?'. Fair enough when theyre a bit older and can learn a few lines and sing along to songs but in nursery Im pretty sure they would rather just be playing!

    thanks hun :)
my Auntie used to tell me the world is your oyster ... and live life to the full after all you only live once. the condition i have is cerebral palsy and scoliosis of the spine. my specialist told me i would never have children, but being so young LO must have meant to be and youth was on my side, but that's not to say i will be able to have more in the future or even now and im taking massive risks. (its not the catching, its the carrying because my cp is effected from waist down) not life threatening but i could end up in a wheelchair for the rest of my life where as at the moment i can walk... but not far. and i cant not do anything i just adapt to make things easier for me. x

Oh optimistic-mummy, it's so sad about your health :( I had to google it as I didn't know what it was, but now I have even more admiration for you now. xxx

I stayed up late, finishing reading a book that gave me nightmares... So now starting the day an hour late !!!

Euronoris, so the party bags are true then... But it must all cost a fortune  And the playground politics of some mothers... I'll never fit in... I don't even like the idea of mother and toddler groups :( I wonder what I will do...

Dont worry about it Ive never bothered with any of that stuff theres lots of Mums that dont do it. Ive tried going out with lunch a couple of times with my friend and her toddler, its generally unenjoyable and hard work! Just stick to the playgroups, parks etc. sometimes you have a chat to another Mum but a lot of times everyones just too busy running around after their own kids!!

I will have to do that then! Or maybe, once I'm a mother, I'll go crazy with party bags and flashy parties :rotfl: (though I doubt it!) And to be honest, I don't think I'll have the time!

But I know there is one area where I'll have to be extra careful: I don't want to turn into a tiger mum but I have the potential of being one, that's for sure :o

Last night, after finishing my horribly gory novel, I did some research on ovulation and how the whole thing works. I surprised myself as I remembered quite a bit :D I also read some pretty disturbing things... Why do I always get so focused on the negative side of things?

Anyway, how are you all planning to spend your Sunday?
