Help son looking at websites he shouldnt be

I think the "computer in a public area" idea is a good one, but I'm not convinced by the various software that restricts the sites kids can access.
I've never tried to circumvent that software, but I think a motivated 13 year old could probably manage. For example, I'd be surprised if any Windows software could prevent him from booting to a Linux live CD and then accessing the internet through Linux rather than Windows.
Edit: (Posted at the same time as bob_a_builder). I like the DNS idea - if you stick that on your router it would take a bit more technical nous for your son to even work out how come he couldn't access the sites. Maybe this is because I'm not a parent...but I reckon that if he did manage to crack your security, he'd have learnt lots of worthwhile things doing so!0 -
As well as all the good advice you have been given I would also stress that boredom can sometimes play role. Keeping them busy helps with lots of problems with teenagers (has he clubs to go to?)..just my opinion.0

I'd be stunned if a 13 year old had as much technical knowledge as your suggesting, especially seeing as he isn't even able to cover up what sites he viewing.
I really don't buy the whole '!!!!!! will warp his opinion of women' argument as I simply don't think it's true but at the same time I don't think a 13 year old should be viewing such material, especially considering the kind of stuff that's easily available from a simple google search.
I'd agree with those who suggested sticking some protection on.0 -
I walked in DS room 2 nights ago and he had a page up, from where i stood at the door it looked like lots of pictures of women some naked, he is 16.
i gave him the look of you've been caught again, but did say to him last night that although i know he looks at it, (much cheaper than a !!!!!! mag) be aware that this is not what normal girls look like.
It's a boy thing, your son is hormonal, be in the internet !!!!!! mags etc, he will find a away to look.
I wouldn't ban him, it won't turn him into a pervert, just make sure he knows that airbrushing is involved in these pictures and normal nice girls don't look like that in the real world.0 -
Also watch out for iPods, Nintendo DSs, Wiis, mobiles phones, Sony PSP etc. All are capable of browsing the web.0

Oh and mods, if you do feel the need to move this to the arms, I would (as someone kindly pointed out) rather it was deleted than moved there.
Hi immortalprincess
Glad and MrsTine are the board guides here . I really don't think they will move the thread especially to The Arms , but if you are worried you can send them both a PM .:)
All you need for your laptop is some form of parental control on your sons user name some are free others including Net Nanny have to be paid for .
What type of operating system do you have please ?
Windows 7 for example has a built in parental controls which enables you to block unsutable sites .

Hi, my son was doing this at 13 also, I was really worried too, but at nearly 18 he isn't sexually deviant and has a normal relationship with a girl....Blackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0

Will have a look at those security websites and see if I can download the security.
I have spoken to him tonight and said he will only be allowed on the computer in the kitchen, he hasnt to take it into his room.
I have asked him why he looks at these sites, and he said all the boys at school have been talking about them, and he felt left out!!!!
His dad is going to have another word with him tomorrow. I have had to tell my husband to calm down but hes more annoyed that he has ignored our rules, and he feels he has no respect for us rather than him looking at the !!!!!!!
Another thing thats really bugging me is the trust issue. he got caughte before and said he wouldnt do it again, and I trusted him not to look at them, and he has broken that trust. I find it really hard to trust people, so Im a bit upset about that, I feel kind of let down! Does that make any sense?
Oh and mods, if you do feel the need to move this to the arms, I would (as someone kindly pointed out) rather it was deleted than moved there.
he's probably only annoyed because he cant get a look in:rotfl:
seriously though the best thing you can do is put the comp in an area where you can keep an eye on him.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -
When my eldest was about 15 he was in his room supposedly doing some revision for school exams. I went in and he very quickly appeared to shuffle something out of sight. I aksed him what he'd got and he said it was just his chemistry book. He is a total rubbish liar, had gone bright red and looked so guilty so I demanded to know what else he'd got. He did try to protest but I wasn't having it and said I knew he'd hidden something and if he didnt show me I was going to find it myself. At which point he turned even redder, reached under his pillow and pulled out.....his book on hints for practicising his bass guitar. I was speechless and trying not to laugh and then it dawned on him what I'd thought...he just said that fgs if he wanted to look at !!!!!! he'd get that on the internet!!0

I agree with the idea to have the computer in a communal area, no 13yr old will want to look at !!!!!! with his parents in the room.
That said I think you're kidding yourself if you think he'll stop looking at !!!!!!, as jamesh said games systems & mobile phones access the internet. Or he'll look at it with his mates. He's 13 he's going to be naturally curious, I'd guess most men (including your OH) looked at !!!!!! when they were young teenagers, the only difference is back then there was only magazines and videos but I bet if the internet was around then they'd have used it.Dum Spiro Spero0
