Applied for this account, just called for an update and have been told that it has been declined and that a letter is in the post.
I currently have a current account with Abbey, with overdraft etc but am claiming back from them my bank charges and was worried that they may close my account.
Due to my credit rating not being that good, 1 ccj and a few defaults no one will give me a current account.
I was really hopeful too as so many people who seemed to be far worse than me had been successful.
Oh well! Never mind- I hope Abbey don't close my account!!

I think you should appeal. I didnt even send them a cheque and my credit score isnt good at all but I dont have any ccj or defaults. Its just so wierd you have got a current acount at the moment and they rejected you as I didnt even have a bank account when I got accepted.

I dont think that its so easy any more to get a citibank account as it was before. Now its as hard as getting current account of any other bank.

You can try for the halifax easycash, a good account and you also get a visa electron debit card with it but you will not get a chequebook or overdraft facility.

I put a letter stating the following:

    Hi,
I am applying for a Citibank sterling current account and I have enclosed the signed application with this letter. I don’t have a cheque book at the moment but I called the Citibank helpline and I was told that the cheque is used for the identity verification only and that I can send a photocopy of any other proof of id instead. I am sending you the photocopy of my passport for id verification and for address verification I am sending you a utility bill.
I request you to process my application as soon as you can please.

    Name.
    Date.
    Signature.

Thats it and I got the account. :j

My husband has 2 CCJ's and loads of defaults and he couldn't even get a basic account so it seems very strange that they have declined your application on that basis.

I know that they decline applications if you have a CIFAS (fraud) indicator (I rang them to ask on what basis they decline before we applied) on your credit rating, it may be you have this on your credit file which may be an error on the credit referencing agencies part so it is probably worth getting a copy to check and then appealling to Citibank, as long as you are armed with info you can suport your application further. I'd also include copies of payslips and recent bank statements too.

Maybe they have cottoned on to the fact that people with not so great credit ratings have been applying and they are putting a stop to it????

I think that may be what has happened ? All the declined ones seem to have been in the last week or so! I did actually include a payslip aswell- so they have seen that. Also I have on line access to credit files and there is nothing flagged up by CIFAS.
Will wait till I receive the letter and then call them up.
I just hope Abbey dont close my current account (chq book, debit card, overdraft etc) when I claim back my charges!
