  • After reading all the positives on here my OH decided to apply and has been turned down.

He is a discharged bankrupt (discharged June 2005) with nothing elese adverse on credit file. He applied for no overdraft and wanted to pay his salary in each month (£2k). He's maintained a credit card without default since then and has healthy looking savings as well. He is on electoral roll and sent the additional id as he has no cheque book.

Seems completly stupid that he's managed to keep clean since the discharge and can get this account and there has been people on here with CCJ's and defaults who are handed the lot. Seems that they must have a very inconsistent way of accepting customers.

Very dissapointed in Citibank especially as we were after opening one of their savings accounts as well

Did they tell you any reason for rejecting?
No one knows what their accepting criteria is as its too much fluctuating.
But one thing is confirmed that it is getting harder and harder to get this account.

Seems a bit strange in my view that he's been turned down, seeing as though a bank issued a credit card to him after being discharged from bankruptcy, I was suprised I gotthe account although as I said in a earlier post I only have 1 default and no ccj's.

Hi, I applied for a citibank account on 31/1. As i live with my mum, and dont have a utility bill, i sent them photocopies of bank statements, driving license, passport and enclosed a letter stating i do not have a cheque book. They have sent all the documents back with a letter stating that to apply i must include a utility bill and a £1 cheque in my name. I've just rung them and they have said ring back in two days and they will have an answer to what i should supply them with. Seems i cant get the account at the moment, am a bit dismayed as i dont have ANY adverse credit, i just aren't on the electoral roll. I have credit card and loans etc, seems wierd i've lived in england for 28 years and yet there was a person earlier who was an immigrant and applied and got one by supplying less ID then me. They must have a strange selection process!

I just called them, and i have been declined. I think people need to now stop telling people that they are likely to get this account, as there are a number of people now that have been declined.
I have one CCJ (cleared) and 3 defaults.
Now i have no idea what to do. I have a joint bank account with Halifax with my EX that they wont take off her name until the £1000 overdraft is paid off. And if they did take her name off, as one of the defaults is with a halifax Credit card, they would take the money straight out of my account if it was just in my name. Cant afford for them to do that!
I applied for a Basic account with A&L last year, but was turned down - i think because i already have a bank account!

I dont know what to do - i need to have another account to pay wages in, and could really do with a debit card. But I cant seem to get one!

Do you think its worth apealing to CITI?

    I'm so disapointed.

Hi first of all I am sorry that you couldnt get this account and the second thing is that if you were talking about me as immigrant then let me correct you that I have European Union Swedish nationality. So as I am a EU national I can live where ever I want in the EU with out any immigration. I shifted to UK about 6 months ago and I got my self registered with equifax and experian. I am also on the electoral roll and I sent them an original BT bill with my passport copy, thats why I think I got accepted.
You have to send them at least one original document for address verification but you sent them photocopies. So try to send them some original id docs and get yourself registered on the electoral roll because thats the first thing a bank checks that if you are on the electoral roll or not.

I think that they have really tightened their acceptance procedure now and its going to be like any other bank current account ie they are going to have proper checks and every thing.
If you get rejected its worth to do an appeal if they allow so.

I'm really disappointed for you DanDan ...

It may be worth writing to them to ask why you have been declined and appealing against their decision.

Account wise, I would recommend the Cashminder account from the Co-op - you get a Visa Electron with that account. I have one of these accounts and will continue to so ... IMO, they are a very nice bank ...

As another poster has suggested, you need to send them original documents - not photocopies ... they may accept the type of documents you have then .. :o
