*sheepishly pops head round the corner*
Please can I join in? I always thought that i'd never manage 'old style' because you needed to be super-imaginative or that you needed to be one of those who's Mum taught you to cook (neither of which I am). I'm 23, newly married and am (or i thought i was) a useless cook- I considered myself to be more of a 'career woman' than a homely type (I guess that was just a cop-out). I ventured onto this board for the first time this week and someone kindly suggested that I make some fishcakes out of left over salmon.
Well, I got home from work, went to the shop to buy all that stuff that i'd usually walk past thinking "why bother" (flour, herbs, spices etc) last night and set about cooking what i had lying about to make stuff to store in the freezer. I got out the wedding presents that had been stored in their boxes in the garage (slow cooker, blender, liquidiser) and set to work.
I didn't end up cooking lots (i have to learn to walk first i guess), but I made some salmon fishcakes and a Leek and Potato soup (I'd intended on making a banana bread and butter pudding too) and I was absolutely amazed. It tasted SO much better than bought stuff! The fishcakes were like ones I'd usually eat in a restaurant- I even started to improvise a little and put in some stuff that wasnt on the recipe. Besides it was actually quite a lot of fun! (now I sound really dull!)- I was so proud of myself, I know it's nothing really brilliant but I can't wait for the hubby to come back from working away so that I can amaze him with my new wife skills! (I phoned him and told him all about the 'new me', which he thought was highly amusing!!)
Now I have the 'old-style' bug and im already planning tonights cooking adventures...I want to make some spicy meatballs. i can't WAIT for our new kitchen to be installed in January so I get a better oven and a blinkin' GAS HOB (how hard is it to regulate the temp on an electric hob!)...previously I only wanted the new kitchen so that it looked nicer *rolls eyes*), now i'll have more space to keep my kitchen gadgets!
Because we don't really struggle with money, I'd never thought on cutting down on our £60-£70 a week shopping budget (yep, just for us two- AND DH works away 3 days a week, eating on company expenses!) but thinking about it it's just such a WASTE (the amount of stuff that got thrown away was disgusting). So I'm gonna make a meal plan today and do my shopping tonight and see how much I can save!
Anyway, sorry for the long post!0 -
Happy Birthday Queenie
:bdaycake:
Dh has just been very impulsive and bought a wireless contraption so we can use the internet in different areas of the house.
Should be "interesting" as he gets things set up , or not!!!
Washing is blowing on the line and slow cooker has spag bol sauce in it - sausages will be added later and I will then mash potatoes so that three of us can have spag bol and the other three can have savoury sausage and mash.
Dds complaining about the state of our tree - say it is falling apart so may go to Sainsbury's and use Nectar points to get one of their fibre optic trees.
Need to wrap a couple more presents and knit some more of the fluffy scarf.
Hugs to all."This site is addictive!"

Hope NY goes well gingin
Hi everyone else.
Been up since 7 a.m. today. Had to rush round to get penninewoman out of the house and off to work on time. She took half breakfast with her to eat later in the day . . .:)
One lot of washing in and hung now. Upstairs vacced and dusted.
Old bills shredded. My Documents backed up to DVD. We do this every now and again but back up to external drive every week and to another PC every month.
But today I interrupted the writing process and so now have a disk that isn't certain what it is - am waiting whilst it plays with itself trying to sort it out.
Love the digital keyboard my mum and sister bought me. has around 400 different voices. Mmmmm. Love the theatre and chapel voices.
So wish me luck with my practising trying to get back to the standard I was 40 years ago . . . . which wasn't that good but better than I am now.
Got first Christmas card today and must post a set I did last night to those great guys who mentored students for me last year when I was still working.
And then I must try to find all those cards penninewoman bought in January and stored somewhere safely . . . .
Am also in middle of checking bulbs in Christmas lights to find the dud ones. have to be careful here not to miss anything. The string of bulbs is spread out over the hall floor. I had to send BIG cat out as he was trying to help by checking the bulbs himself.
Enough. Must get back to working. Hope everyone has a good day.

Welcome ftbworried
Didnt come on here earlier as really need to make some headway into my admin work which I have done though a lot more to do.As far as the house is concerend so far have only put a load in the washer which I will get out and dry soon, another load must be done today also.
Also need to pop to the Library to return some books and chose some new ones (its a tiny library so doesnt take long to chose). Am at dentist tonight which is over an hour away and need to drop off children at my sisters on route so not much will be done at all. (Having a tranquiliser so will just be sleeping when I get home). So hope instead to get up early and make a good start tomorrow before I go to college.
Need to get back on with it now so have a great day.

Welcome to old style.
I used to be a "career woman " too. Became a stay at home mum when i had twins 21 years ago. In the last year or so i have bought a new slowcooker, which is on nearly every day, bought a bread maker, made jam , home made pizza, bread and rolls.
I get a real kick out of making something in about half an hour when a DD has peered into the fridge and said there is nothing to eat!!!!lol.
It is amazing what you can do with just, eggs, cheese, flour, pasta etc.
I find that with the slow cooker I now just "lob things in" and it is always tasty and I know what has gone into it.
If DH is not impressed by old style as a title telll him you are doing a "nigella!";)"This site is addictive!"

ftbworried - Hi:wave:
Well - DD now in bed for afternoon nap. Health visitor is coming for development checkup at 2. So I best be ready for her. DD will probably still be asleep but they don't seem to worry about that - shows how meaningful it all is. I think they're just checking I do feed here and don't lock her in the coal shed (well I do, but not all the time;) )
Had a friend round with her little boy this morning so the house is TIDY! Why is it sooo easy to keep on top of things when someone's coming.
Gingin (I hope it is you - I always forget by the time I get to the end of the thread who's doing what) You'll love NY. I've been a few times with work, DH would love to go and I keep promising we can - maybe next year. I'll have to get saving.
Off to pick this mornings toys up.
