I have had the Readycash Account with Clydesdale Bank for about 6 months now and agree thats its a fantastic account and I can't see them withdrawing the Maestro facility. I previously had a Lloyds TSB Cash Account but moved to Clydesdale as I found the Lloyds account quite restrictive. It had a card that could only be used in Lloyds cash machines and it didn't have a debit card facility. Lloyds have now changed their Cash Account to include a Visa Debit card but you can still only take money out from Lloyds cash machines. I got the Visa Debit card through and will only use it for Internet purchases overseas that do not accept Maestro.

The statement I get from Clydesdale has Maestro transactions listed as Card 1. Its strange that online statements show Switch Transaction, Phone banking says Maestro Transaction and postal statements say Card 1.

The card number is a reference to the issue number, so joint account would have differing issue numbers and you could track who took out cash or used the debit cards etc

The only slight differences with the 3 in 1 card is the cheque guarantee hologram inplace of the Maestro clock/world hologram, and lack of account number printed at the bottom, although as in the 2 in 1 card its the last 8 digits of the Maestro number.

What do you mean you cannot pay cash in, do you mean at the counter or at your branch?

I am going to look into Yorkshire bank next week :) I really need a debit facility and Nationwide only give a cash card. I have been refused accounts recently will that go against me? I have defaults with 2 of my creditors & my rating is 445!
  • I switched to a basic account with co op (didn't need anything else) after claiming charges from Lloyds TSB

Ok service for a basic account

But - they closed my account after one missed direct debit - i couldn't buy food or anything (the missed DD was due to accute illness)

they opened it up again eventually after many calls - but it left me right in the ****

take a look at my "New Free Current Account Banking Org" thread for a better way

My only reason for needing a bank account is to pay in my JobSeekers Allowance. I looked at Alliance & Leicester and they say you cannot have a current account if you're depositing less than £250 a month! So thats that out of the window (I would choose A&L because they give decent interest rates)

The PDF file linked to in the 1st page is out of date, its not there anymore since this thread started in 2006.

Does anyone know what a good bank would be to join considering that I will only be depositing about £200 a month into it?

Gotta consider the convenience of "hole in the wall" too here folks, I mean yeah CitiBank might be a good bank to join but where have you ever seen a cash machine for CitiBank? I know I never have, its all RBS/Natwest/Lloyds etc. If you draw money from another banks ATM they charge you don't they? Sod that! I am not paying a bank to look after my money, they should be paying me.

Heres the updated link to the "Basic Bank Accounts" PDF file:
    http://server-uk.imrworldwide.com/cgi-bin/b?cg=Pdfs&ci=fsa&tu=http://www.moneymadeclear.fsa.gov.uk/pdfs/bank_accounts.pdf

Reading through that, all these banks offer: Ability to set up Direct Debits and Standing Orders, none of them require any money to open the account, most importantly, all of these supply you with a Debit Card (Solo, Electron or Maestro)

-- OFFERING DIRECT DEBIT/STANDING ORDER *AND* CASH CARDS --

    Clydesdale - "ReadyCash"
    Co-Operative Bank - "CashMinder"
    Halifax - "Easycash"
    Natwest - "Step Account"
    Ulster Bank - "Step Account"
    Yorkshire Bank - "ReadyCash"

So lets see which one charges the least for unpaid items: Halifax - "Easycash"

Halifax is a very well known bank and has cash machines everywhere - I am going t o choose this one because they offer the best deal:

    1 - Cash card.
2 - Direct Debit and Standing Orders can be set up.
3 - Cash machines easily accessible (this avoids any charges by other ATM's)
4 - They only (heh - "only") charge £15 for unpaid items, all others are higher.

So then Halifax's "Easycash" account seems to be the distinct winner.

    :D
  • I'm having difficulty with my banking situation...

I had a coop cash minder account for the past 9 months and they closed my account because I went under by a few pence - but it happened twice in the space of 2 weeks.

I do not have a very good credit rating so I will not be allowed credit.

I need a bank account for my wages, paying bills, etc

I tried for the citibank but it was declined.

Where can I go from here? I really need advice.

    Best wishes,

    Peaceful :)
  • Sorry because I'm new I forgot to say I earn around £1500 a month and I would need an account for my salary and to pay bills... :)

    Halifax m8!

The Halifax Easycash account, I just filled in the online application myself, its really easy...

    https://www.halifax.co.uk/easycash/forms/ey_main.asp?applicationState=1&brand=halifax&navigation=b','','/',1,1,0,0,0,0,800,600

They will check for "Undischarged bankrupt" and "Record of fraud". As for bad credit history, I cannot say. I also have bad credit history. Halifax lets you know within seven days if you're accepted or not.

Halifax is my recommendation, they offer a cash card / standing orders / direct debits which are the three main things I need. Reason I choose Halifax is because if you do overspend, they charge £15 which is less than any of the others (according to the PDF file I linked to in my last post).
