  • Very interesting, does the card have raised numbers so it can be used by imprint or is it purely an "electronic use only" card?

Still the account is still let down by being unable to use link machines and it also isn't clear whether the account has access to a full counter service.

I would like to add that the debit card is VISA (not Electron). The very first basic account with a VISA debit card.

Even though there is no credit check/scoring, they will do checks like ID, address, record of fraud, and bankruptcy.

Also, RBS basic bank account (Key account) will have a debit card too starting from 2008. It's a Solo debit card. It use to come with a Cashline cash card.

  • I have just come back fro LloydsTSB.

They confirmed that the Visa Debit card is available now for new customers (as of last friday). My wife and I made an application whilst in the branch.

We insisted that we only wanted a Cash account. We went through the application, but at the end she said that she will not state Cash Account on the application because we may get a a normal account. I said we won't, but she then said, if they say no for the normal one, you will still get then basic cash account with Visa debit card.

The computer responded with a message asking her to call another department.

She did (from another room) and then came back with a 'sorry, they said no to everything'

We have very poor credit but no bankruptcy or fraud so do not know why we were turned down for even a basic account.

That TSB account would be PERFECT if it wasn't for the cash machine matter.

I have a RBS basic account which I have used for about 6 transactions max since opening it in 2002. Though from about 9 months ago or so it has started to appears on my credit report as a current account. I queried it with RBS who told me it was still a standard route 21 account.

Not that I'm complaining as it adds to the green zeroes on my report :D.
  • I am going to apply for the basic account with Yorkshire bank, please could anyone tell me what I could use as photographic ID if I don't have a passport or driving license please?

  • Thanks to everyone on here I went to Yorkshire Bank and opened a Readycash account straight away no problems, The staff are very friendly and I recieved my card 2 days later and my internet banking and pin today all within a week of opening my account, its fantastic that you get a maestro card and hope they dont decide to withdraw it.

On Internet banking the transactions come up as switch do they still come up as switch on the actual bank statement?

I have had the Readycash Account with Clydesdale Bank for about 6 months now and agree thats its a fantastic account and I can't see them withdrawing the Maestro facility. I previously had a Lloyds TSB Cash Account but moved to Clydesdale as I found the Lloyds account quite restrictive. It had a card that could only be used in Lloyds cash machines and it didn't have a debit card facility. Lloyds have now changed their Cash Account to include a Visa Debit card but you can still only take money out from Lloyds cash machines. I got the Visa Debit card through and will only use it for Internet purchases overseas that do not accept Maestro.

The statement I get from Clydesdale has Maestro transactions listed as Card 1. Its strange that online statements show Switch Transaction, Phone banking says Maestro Transaction and postal statements say Card 1.

I work for Abbey and as far as I am aware, the FSA has stipulated that you should only be declined for a basic account if you have been declared bankrupt or have been convicted of fraud.

If people are being declined for basic accounts- check your credit report and make sure that a full credit score has not been done i.e your application may have been processed as a full bank account with all the facilties.

Sadly, due to high targets, many advisers will do this as they receive next to no credit for basic bank accounts. It is also the case that some banks "discourage" their staff from opening these accounts as they are of no financial benefit to the company.

Abbey's basic account is exactly as it sounds - Basic! But it does suit many customers that simply want a direct debit facility and an ATM card? You can apply to upgrade the account after 12 months but this will involve a credit score at that point.

can anyone give me a link to an fsa site that says the above. please?

Also can anyone recommend an account for someone with no credit history at all?

I might be being cynical but LloydsTSB might be trying to get more money out of its poorer customer with the fact the new 2-in-1 Visa Debit card cant be used in ATM's other than ones it owns.
It is a Visa card (with a PAN number that is the 16 digit number across the front beginning with 4) so it should work in any machine with the Visa or Plus logo (unless that has been restricted but that is very unlikely as then you it would not be much use abroad), then you are faced with the Visa cash advance charge (it is something like 2.5%, minimum £3, on all Visa Debit Cards they issue for UK non-link cash withdrawals, but nowadays everyone is in the link network, or similar transactions like buying currency, and also the same outside the country), and if you use a machine that charges a fee but still takes Visa and Plus cards, that would go on top of it.

Smithja i thought the same thing, so i tried my new Lloyds Visa card in another banks machine, and it lets you put in your pin etc, when when you try and do anything (take out cash etc) it doesnt let you. Says that this service is not avaliable or something like that.
