Hiya, I have an Alliance and Leicester Current Account that has an Electron card, I have since had a Barclays Visa debit so haven't used the card in a while. I found last week that it had a split in it, so I went to the local branch and I asked for a new one, and she ticked Electron on the computer screen, but on here in sure ive read that Electron is gone and they now issue a Visa 2 in 1 card with no cheque guarantee facility. What will I get?

    CC limits £26000

    Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

    Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.
  • I have today been declared bankcrupt and dispite my insolvency firm telling me that i was allowed a basic bank account i have been told by the official receiver today that he is cancelling this account. It was only through begging that i am able to have the money in it as i need it to pay my rent and bills. I have looked at citibank and want to apply to them for an account but it asks for a cheque which i dont have, any ideas

I don't think they are likely to accept you... I think you may only be eligible for a basic account (not entirely sure as I'm not up to speed on bankruptcy so you'd have to ask someone more knowledgeable) but if this is the case then Citibank do not offer a basic account.
Good luck with it all :)

    hiya,

i dont know about bankruptcy, but i do know that i applyed for a basic account with citibank and got turned down, (i do not have any ccjs, defaults etc) but i do have an iva with payplan and because of this and my bad credit rating they would not open an account, so my advise would be not to worry about citibank, i have tried with natwest aswell who opened my an account and then 2 days later closed it! i tried Lloyds, abbey and even first direct none of which would open me a basic account with no cheque book or switch facility, so i gave up. I ended up sticking with the halifax (my reason for wanting to move was that payplan told me that because two of my debts were with them they could just take the money from my account, but i have to say that they haven't and i even claimed my bank charges back from them and they still allow me to have my current account.):j Halifax i know have a bit of a bad rep but they have done me well have you tried them??

i know yorkshire bank will easily open an account for anyone but you have to go into a branch to open it and being in london its abit difficult!!

    hope this helps a bit

Try Barclays. I was with Woolwich with a Visa Electron and when I migrated over, they gave me the Visa debit card as they said my credit score was pretty reasonable to them (god knows what bad must be in that case!). I even know I defaulted to the tune of £500 with them back in 2000, and they say this is written off now,but it does mean I will never be eligible for an O/D,as their internal scoring will always pick that up.Oops. I asked them for a cheque book, just to pay membership fees and ebay etc, I have no guarantee card, and they sent me one no problem, even a nice laminated holder to keep it in! People bad mouth Barclays, but I have had nothing but good experiences with them.

Just a note - Citibank don't offer a basic bank account.

Their Access account is a basic current account ie: it's basic in the sense it doesn't offer extras like their Plus account does.

I dont know about your financial situation, but there are a couple of Clydesdale branches in central London.

It runs Yorkshire Bank, and can give you a Readycash Account too, but with the added bonus of being able to use the Post Office for deposits/withdrawals.

See here for info and here for locations

I have a RBS basic account which I have used for about 6 transactions max since opening it in 2002. Though from about 9 months ago or so it has started to appears on my credit report as a current account. I queried it with RBS who told me it was still a standard route 21 account.

Not that I'm complaining as it adds to the green zeros on my report :D.

    I spoke too soon.....

Just got a credit report and there is no green zero for September. I presume that since I've changed my address, RBC have realised they made a mistake and put my account bank to a basic one :(.
