I've just started on a DMP & opened an Alliance & Leicester current account via telephone before things got started. My credit score wasnt great but my credit file was ok, no defaults, CCJ's etc. To my surprise i was accepted where others had rejected. It's a great account no overdraft but does give you a debit card and a cheque book which is a plus as most basic accounts dont seem to have the added benefit of the cheque book.

    Hi everyone,
Hope that I am posting on the right thread - I am new to this board.
My reason for posting is I have had a eltter thru from HSBC stating that they're gonna charge me a bomb for my £2000 overdraft (currently free). I have been treated pretty shoddily by HSBC over the years so think it's time to move.
Wondered if someone could point me in the right direction of the best account for my cicumstances?
I'm currently on maternity leave (so no salary going in for another 6 months) and have been with HSBC for 10 years. Have joint acount with partner at Barclays. I need to keep the overdraft (as on maternity leave - limited money!).
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi all! Have just been to open a Clydesdale readycash account before I start my DMP and was given my account number at the interview. Does this mean that they have done all the credit checks on me and ok'd an account or can they still refuse to open one? I don't want to tell my employer these new details for my wages and then find that I don't have the account! Any advice?? Thanks

If they have given you an account number, then your account has been opened and is activated.

You should be fine to use your new account details for your wages.

Obviously you should confirm this with your local branch if you are uncertain. :)

Thanks sgx.saint - I have received my maestro card and pay-in book for my account so things must be ok and I have now let my employer know my details. Now its just sending off all my DMP notification letters and seeing what happens next!!

  • I currently have a Natwest Advantage Gold account with cheque book and a Solo (Maestro) card. I have no overdraft facility but have applied for the CitiBank account, hoping to get the Visa debit card and £500 overdraft limit. Could anyone give me some advice which account is better for the long run and advise about which card and account is better?

I would like to add that the debit card is VISA (not Electron). The very first basic account with a VISA debit card.

Even though there is no credit check/scoring, they will do checks like ID, address, record of fraud, and bankruptcy.

Also, RBS basic bank account (Key account) will have a debit card too starting from 2008. It's a Solo debit card. It use to come with a Cashline cash card.
  • The only downside I can see to the new LLoydsTSB cash account is the fact they still only let you withdraw cash from their cash machines :(

Yes, this is correct. I wonder why they only let customers withdraw cash at LTSB cash machines? Obviously, you are not allowed to withdraw cash abroad too. At least you can use the debit card for overseas purchases though, when seeing the VISA sign.

Almost all basic bank accounts let their customers withdraw money from any cash machine.

If customers make suggestions about the Cash Account debit card being able to withdraw cash from any cash machine, they might take it into consideration. This is how the Cash Account got a VISA debit card, because of customer suggestions/feedback.
