Today when I tried to open a Barclays Cash Card Account in a branch - told it was only available to bankrupts (that they (Barclays) were not allowed to advertise this - because of discrimination). Did not succeed in opening as I am not a bankrupt. Also , just a word on ID - utility bills with Barclays - LPG Gas Invoice is not a utility bill - they accept. Hope this helps someone. v surprised about Cash Card account - is this right? I managed to open a different account elsewhere.

apparently my friend was told the same, but many people on here swear by the account, i was under the impression it was bankrupt friendly account, like the co-operative cashbuilder account.

The Cash Card Account can be available to all customers. They are misleading you. Try another Barclays branch within your area.

It is advertised, as you can see in their brochure and website.

Agreed. If you REALLY wanted the account (and to be honest there are few banks accounts I would push hard for) and assuming you would not credit score for their standard bank account, I would have insisted on being able to apply for the Cash Card account and let them give the nonsense "not a bankrupt" reason for rejecting the application, then taken it further with the complaints department.

On a side note, isn't it about time the FSA grew some balls and stopped basic bank account providers from refusing accounts for spurious reasons.

A friend has just has just had Barclays basic bank account application returned to him, because the branch staff made an error in certifying his ID documents, Why should an applicant sort out the Bank's errors? I may be cynical but they're just trying to be difficult.

I think the Barclays Cash Card Account doesn't need a credit check.

I would advise people to avoid fee paying accounts. They are not worth it.

I always feel that a bank account with a monthly fee and an application fee has no place in a money-saving forum

    Hi

Please can anyone advise on the citibank account that was discussed right at the beginning of this thread...many moons ago!

Is this still a good option with adverse credit etc?

    Thanks

    SnS
Some debts are fun when you are acquiring them, but none are fun when you set about retiring them!!! :(

It's amazing how fast later comes when you buy now!!!!

That particular account is no longer available. If you read further on through the thread people mention that citibank have changed their criteria and their accounts are now more rigorously scored.
They've also closed all branches outside London. Your best sticking with one of the basic bank accounts listed on the FSA guide referred to throughout the thread. http://www.moneymadeclear.fsa.gov.uk/pdfs/bank_accounts.pdf
