All they will do is check your ID and countersign it in the branch and help you fill out the application form. They will then post it internally on your behalf and the details will be sent to the bank once your account has been opened. Basic bank accounts aren't opened in branch normally.

The Barclays basic account can be openend in branch now.

well as i dont have a driving licence or passport, i just took a load of bills, ctc forms etc. I sat for 20 mins at barclays to be told there were no available appointments, could i come back in a couple of days! i did tell the lady that it was just the cashcard one and she said to apply for the bank account, and if i got turned down i would get the basic one! i only want the basic one anyway and dont want an uneccessary search if i can help it! anyway, i have an hour long appt tom morning so i assume they will try and open it in the branch, i also showed my docs to the lady i spoke to and she checked which ones were suitable so hopefully, this time tomorrow i will be in possession of an account!

They accept alternative forms of ID/address. If the bank staff says it's fine, you will be ok.

No matter what account you get, you should be happy. I think the reason that they want to open the bank account first, instead of the basic account is that they earn more comission. :o

Good luck tomorrow. Tell us how it went.

Perhaps we're using different editions of the brochure or even different brochures? Page 8 of the Cash Card brochure dated 11/09 gives a list of ID to prove who you are. Page 9 is headed "In addition,to prove who you are we need to see just one item from this list". Whilst a driving licence is included in both lists, it goes on to state that the address proof used must be different to the identity proof.

I didn't know you were refering to the Cash Card brochure. I was referring to the 'Barclays Accounts' brochure (a different brochure), which lists all the bank accounts they offer (including their facilities).

If the account is openend in branch, one piece of ID (UK passport or driving licence), no proof of address is needed. If applying by post, follow what the Cash Card brochure say.

from reading previous posts i thought that the account would be opened there and then and i would receive account details the same day? i do know of friends who have opened the RBS basic account, the key one, in branch and they have been given their details straight away?

Yes, the accont is openend on the same day, with account details.

Quick Question, If your refused a current account with a bank, Is there a time limit to when you can apply again. Wanted a basic account with a bank but they tried me for a current and I was refused.

Good evening all, I hope you are all well. I wonder if somebody could advise me please. I have to open a bank account which also provides a cheque book. It is to be used to receive direct payments from Social Services. I have defaults registered on my credit file and I am worried that it will be imposible to open such an account. Any suggestions where I could try? Many thanks for reading my post.

Try applying in 3 months time. When banks refuse a current account, they will open a basic account. What bank did you try? Next time, try asking them to open a basic account, without 'trying' to open a current account.

Basic bank accounts don't provide cheque books. Benefits and other government related payments are put into your bank account these days.
  • When my boys were 11yrs old i opened lloyds basic bank accounts for each of them with a cashpoint card,so their birthday/xmas money, paper round wages would go into them.
I had to prove i was their mother by producing a marriage certificate & passport, eventhough i had been a customer with lloyds for 20yrs & produced a debit card. The boys had to show their birth certificates & passports.
The boys were given accounts and my eldest(17yr) has gone on too have a normal current account with debit card.
It has been a learning kerb for my children to save money and access it when they want to buy something for themselves.
I think it would be a good thing if parents opened accounts for their children,it may stop the hassle later in life.
  • I have read with interest about people's problems with application's for Basic Bank Account's. My advice to you is ALWAYS provide full information on the Account Application, and don't be ecconomical with the truth. If you tell the truth then you are not going to get turned down for CCJ's, being Bankcrupt etc. The problems start when you try to hide it aka Application Fraud.

The other comments regarding Banks Closing accounts after going overdrawn once I have read this on these boards, this is nonsense (well at least at the one I work at). Most operate a two strikes and your out, but will listen to the reason and often give a third chance.

Regarding the Visa debit, these do not authorize payment for funds not in your account. At point of sale you will have had the funds, however if a Direct Debit etc has gone out before the purchase has left your account then yes you will be overdrawn. You need to ensure that if you use the card, you have enough funds to cover what is going out.

Another reason you will have your account closed is if you make fraudulant payments in. You can't expect banks to allow you even the basic banking facility if you are going to be the recipient of fraudulant funds.

Thank you for your reply. I don't need a basic one. An account for Direct payment is to be used only for Direct payments and nothing else. You are not allowed to receive any other payments into it.

I think you're confusing the Post Office Card Account with basic bank accounts. The Basic Bank Accounts listed on the moneymadeclear website and discussed here all, I believe, allow you to receive credits from any legal source. Any account offering a cheque book is going to be credit-scored.

Norwich and peterborough will offer you a basic bank account, intially they will ask you to apply for a gold account, if your credit rating is poor, they will then issue you a basic account with a CHEQUE BOOK and cash card possbily a debit card aswell depending on whether they think you have a regular income depositing into the account, you will not get an overdraft or a cheque guareenteed card.
    Best of luck

  • N&P recommendation seconded. I assisted my mother in opening one recently - there is a question in the application process asking if you would accept a basic bank account if they are unable to approve you for the "full" account, which simplifies the account opening process considerably in my opinion and is something banks should consider adopting.
