It is just not an economical way to buy the gas, a tank would be preferable, but you should definitely have more than one cylinder so that it would change over when it runs out enabling you to obtain a new one. Is this the way the gas was supplied to the property before you moved in?

Hi thanks for the reply. Can you tell me how we've been misled? We paid around £70 for the gas and £30 for the cylinder
Shouldn't have paid £30 for the cylinder, you can pick them up for free easily enough, just wander down to the local tip. £70 is a bit expensive for the gas unless you are living far from civilisation.
  • Thanks for the messages.

We paid £70.49 for the gas and £30 for what's described as "new gas bottle charge". Is that really a deposit so we'll get it back?

From looking on the internet and from replies here I guess we need more than one each time (as advised by our landlord!) for cheapest and most efficient way of doing this. (we cant get a bulk tank due to size of property.)

What i really need to know is how long each tank should generally last. For the past ten days we've used on average 5/6 hours heating both our home and water. With this our tank lasted 10 days. Is this about right, or could there be a leak somewhere?

We had someone come out and check the system only a week ago and he gave us a landlord certificate.

Thanks for all the advice so far, keep it coming!

Apologies - I have no idea how long your supply should last. I guessed the size of a tank would be a factor as to why you don't have one. I am sure there will be someone on this forum with more useful information for you. The Landlord's certificate would have been the compulsory annual safety inspection that ensures your appliances conform to current regs. I can say that when we move house in the not too distant future, at the top of our 'wish list' is a property that does NOT rely on LPG as we have found it to be the most expensive way to heat our house. Luckily you are renting, so I guess have options in the future.

It is the bottle deposit but you never really get it back. To get anything back you need the form you sign when you first pick up the bottle and then there is the small print on the back which basically screws you out of the deposit. It says something like after 6 months you are only entitled to 50% of the deposit after 5 years you get nothing.

I think you are paying quite a bit too much for the cylinder, you should be able to get that down to about £55 (shop around)

In winter, im my mobile home i get through around £100-120 per month (a bit over 2 bottles worth in cylinder form) from our bulk tank. going on what you said you are using about 30% more gas than i do, so depending on the size of your propery and how often you use it i dont think that you are far off.

As stated earlier, you should have an auto switching system and use 2 bottles atthe same time

LPG cylinder prices vary wildly across the country, some people on the mainland are paying well in excess of £60 whereas here in Lincs you can get a 47kg for around £40. Did you go direct to Flogas for your cylinder or to a shop/dealer? You really shouldn't be asked to pay a deposit on bottles destined for central heating use, lpg gas suppliers should be falling over themselves to get your regular custom as opposed to someone who buys a bottle once a year for a caravan.
Gas used up in 10 days at 6 hours a day on an average dwelling would seem normal in my experience, we can use a 47kg here in 5 to 6 days due to the size of the building. We have a bank of four with a changeover as is normal for C/H.
LPG heating is horrendously expensive which is why I now use a woodburner even though I get bottled gas at cost as I'm a dealer
  • Thanks so much for all your help and advice.

We've done some shopping around and found a supplier who's charging us £50 a bottle (including delivery and without wanting a deposit).

It appears the first supplier charged us way too much and are quite notorious in the West Midlands for being overpriced.

An expensive mistake, but glad I came on here to get the advice so now, hopefully, it won't be such a burden on the bank balance!
  • Hi on 9th November I ordered two large size gas bottles for heating and cooking, cost £74 ordered two more today because indicator arrow is in full view cost £84 where can I get them cheaper, live in Kent.
  • Hi further to my comment yesterday, my gas was delivered today by Calor and I asked the delivery guy how the change over works between the four cylinders. He then said that in weather like we have now I could expect to use 1 cylinder per week!!!!!! At £41 per cylinder that's a hell of a lot of money. He also conmmented that because I live in a mobile home on a mobile home park I get a better rate than if I Lived in a house constructed of brick etc, the cost then would be £110 per cylinder. So it seems that I am stuck with the cost Calor charge as I can't find a cheaper supplier.
