Zara is not very well with her back legs, Xrays showed hips displasia and arthritis, she is not even 5 :(

She is on Metacam at the moment, for about a month now but I am not sure it helps.

Her vet, who is an orthopeadic specialist is away till the end of April - will see him beginning of May to perhaps change her meds but I am looking at Bioflow collars and wonder if anyone got any experience with those? Would they help in her condition?

She already has an arthopeadic bed - unfortunately she hardly ever uses it as she seems to like sleeping on hard floor (tiles in the hallway or laminate anywhere else in the flat).

Someone on here (Ali-t?) suggested that collar some time ago, I looked at it few times and just wonder would it really help?

I have seen many reviews on various websites selling those but... any experienced users of such collars on here that could comment on what conditions they helped/did nto help their own dogs?

I am looking at those ones:

Thanks a lot :(

I bought a magnetic collar for one of my collies that sometimes struggles out on walks, I can honestly say that since he has been wearing it he hasn't had an episode out on walks since, he would get to the point where his back legs would wobble, being a collie he doesn't know when to stop running!
I have used magnetic boots on horses too with good effect. A supplement that is fantastic too is Cortaflex, but it is probably worth talking to your vet before trying any supplements.

This is the collar I bought http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/EquiMagnets-Magnetic-Therapy-Dog-Collar-/360360781173?pt=UK_Horse_Wear_Equipment&hash=item53e72d2575

I only put it on for shorts periods as some dogs can have a reaction to magnets but mine was fine, he now only has it on half an hour before walks, during and a short while after.

    Hope this helps;)

Redrufus - thanks a lot for that.

Was your dog diagnosed with dysplasia or arthritis?

Prince (11 year old Great Dane) has quite severe arthritis.
When we collected him from the rescue centre we thought he might have wobblers due to the way he walked, he also used to fall over quite a lot.
We got him a Bioflow collar, and within days saw an improvement.
These days he walks straight and true, will have a gallop here and there and will often stand on his back legs looking through the kitchen window.
    I hope this helps

Lisa - thanks a lot for that.

So Bioflow it is for Zara as soon as I have few pounds - can not look at my girl walking like she does now :(
  • Henry, my 15yo miniature long-haired dachshund, has arthritis in one of his shoulders. I bought him a Bioflow collar, and tried hard to be objective when looking for any improvement.

I think that there has been some improvement. However, just over 7 weeks ago, I started taking him to hydrotherapy, and with just 7 sessions, there has been an even greater improvement, along with an impressive weight loss (much needed - he has his second official weigh-in at the vet's tonight) and a marked improvement in muscle tone as well.

I appreciate that money is tight at the moment - I'm not sure how many more hydrotherapy sessions I can book for Henry, without having a pause so I can get some more money together - but perhaps hydrotherapy is something else that's worth looking into later, when funds permit?

It was me that was waxing lyrical about them. My almost 8 year old staff has arthritis in one leg that started after an op. The bioflow collar was amazing and really helped her out.

Although you are saying you need to get some money together for it, there is a 90 day money back guarantee so if it doesn't suit Zara you can send it back and will only have paid the postage.

I don't give my girl metacam at all now and she walks for miles with no apparant discomfort either at the time or the next day whereas before she could barely walk the next day.

    Ali-t thanks for that.

How was yoru dog diagnosed if you do not mind me asking?

Zara had Xrays and it was pretty bad....so wonder is because of the degenerative changes she already got (hips displasia and arthritis) - will the collar help at all.

Will order one tomorrow and see how she gets on with it - will also see the vet early May and take her off metacam as it is not helping at all, if anything she is actually worse.

She sat a few times today during a short walk, 2 days ago she fell over while she was trying to sit - her back legs could not support her sit :(

Meerkat - thanks, thought of that too but I really can not afford it, there is one not too far from me and they charge £18 per hour which I simply do not have (need to check insurance perhaps this could cover the hydrotherapy but not sure if she needs a referral from a vet for this to work) but as I do not have a car - it is 2 busses away from me and not many bus drivers will allow a GS onto a bus grrrrrr

    :(

She had an op for a luxating patella and although she recovered well from it, not long after that she was struggling to walk and at times needed help to stand up. Like your dog, she was really young at the time and it was in the leg that she had the op on. The vet said it was because of the friction from the leg rubbing and that it is common to get arthritis after operations. She was on metacam and I was also using cortaflex but she wasn't keen on the taste of cortaflex and it is a product that needs to be used for life. The collar is cheap, effective and drug free.

Thanks Ali-T - where did you get the collar from please?

The link I put in my first post, the collar is £30.90 (including delivery) , seen them cheaper but do not want to risk getting a fake so will probably order from there?

Here is comes to £27.95 (including delivery - theirs is cheaper than the other one) :
