  • I am with First Direct and I have already claimed using the template letter and adding interest.

I wrote asking for £894.37 including interest as per the template letter. They have written back to say that of the £720.75(?!) I have claimed, only some of it is reclaimable ie there are amounts of £105.00 Recall and Unpaid Item fees, £42.00 Electronic Funds Transfer fees and £173.75 Arrangement and Renewal fees. 'As these fees are specific to services requested by you, they are non-refundable'. Is this correct? Can anyone tell me what 'Charge arrangement and Renewal Fees' are? I have no idea! I have been charged amounts from £17.50 to £56.25 for Arrangement fees and £15.00 and £20.00 for Renewal fees. Also, it seems to me that £21.00 for an interbank payment, which I assume is automatic, is a bit steep, but I realise that they may not apply. If they do, however, I should like to know.

They told me to accept their offer of £325.00 within ten days, which was not possible as I was away when the letter arrived. Can anyone help please?

    HI Supergrandma

The bank is quite correct about charges that, as they say, 'are specific to services requested by you'.

Take a look at the help thread, post 4 to see what you can and can't claim - here is the link:

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=400981

If you don't know what the charges are for or the descriptions are baffling you give them a call and ask them exactly what the charge was for.

    Good luck with your claim.....

    Regards

  • Help needed on claiming back bank charges from Lloyds TSB. I have got as far as getting back 6 years statements but as I have had an overdraft with Lloyds for the last few years I want to use the bank charges to pay off the overdraft.

There seems to be so many charges on the statements that I have obtained I am not sure which ones I can lawfully claim back and which ones to ignore please could I have some advice on this?

For example can I claim back excess interest on overdraft charges which is one that seems to keep coming up? There seems to be a standard monthly charge in additon of around £8 or £10 and I am presuming that this is their normal charges and I can't claim that back.

Be very grateful for someone to make things a bit clearer. Thank you

Thanks to Rex_Mundi for the excerpt from his post below:

List Of Charges We Can Reclaim
The following is a list of Bank charges that we can and cannot claim for. Different banks may have different names for the same type of charge, if you are unsure about a charge, just ask in the board. If anyone has different charges to add, please PM myself or Edinburghlass so we can add them.

    CAN BE CLAIMED

    Account misuse fee
    Cheque return fee
    Card misuse fee
    Unarranged borrowing fee
    Unauthorised overdraft fee
    Unpaid DD fee
    Unpaid cheque fee
    Unpaid standing order fee
Late payment fee (credit cards, store cards, catalogues etc)
    Exceeding Authorised Overdraft Limit
    Exceeding Unauthorised Overdraft Limit
    Direct Debit/Standing Order/Cheque returned fee
    Irregular fee

    CANNOT BE CLAIMED

    Cash Machine Withdrawl Fees
    Account Service Charges
    Service Fee / Annual Fee
Charges related to foreign currency transactions and conversions.
Monthly account fees on certain type of accounts.

Different banks may have different names for some charges so anything you arent sure of ask on the forum or check exactly what the charge is for with your bank.

Hope this helps and good luck reclaiming :)
  • As the name suggests, Im not the sharpest knife in the drawer, particulalry when it comes to money. Anyway, I (we) completely understand the process of claiming back our charges, but what exactly are we looking for?
We have 3 HSBC accounts, and have requested and recieved copy statements for 6 years from each.
How do we sort our the wheat from the chaff?? What charges do we start to add up. Please help - because Im a little confused.

ive received my statements from RBS but im confused with the different charges. The one im not sure whether to include or not is the referral charge which varies from £30 to
£90 per month???? Do i add this to my total as well as the unpaid item charges?
  • I would say yes, also use the calculator to add up the interest. You can but try.

If RBS defend your case then it will be up to the court to decide.

    Good luck
