You have a debt of 14k and you pay it off by a token £10 a month (the interest has been stopped, I presume). That means you will never, ever pay it off in your lifetime. Eventually, when you die, the remainder (likely to be the majority of your debt) will be written off.
Were you to ask for a refund of charges (and you can only go back six years, which is early 2001), the bank might pay it onto the outstanding debt balance and cancel the interest-free £10 per months agreement.
Which means you will be far worse off.0 -
Can you claim back interest that is charged by a credit card firm for instance because they say that a payment has arrived a day late and they've charged purchase interest for the month. I know you can claim fees.
Thanks.0 -
Due to an error by myself, I did not have sufficient funds in my account to pay two direct debits. Because of this my bank, Alliance & Leicester, have placed two seperate paid item charges onto my account. Thus totalling £50.
I have called the bank and opologised, and also pointed out that I tried to pay the money in as quickly as possible. Infact I had some money transferring to the account from another A&L account of mine. The lady I spoke to was rather rude, and told me that the charges will stand.
Can anyone tell me if I can claim this back or whether its a valid charge?
In my eyes, those direct debits shouldnt have gone out, and those requesting the cash should contact me. However A&L apparently charge £25 per direct debit they pay for you or £35 per direct debit if they are not paid.0 -
yes they are reclaimable....also if you were overdrawn for 1 day you will get more charges next month, and the same if you were overdrawn for 5 days too (2 seperate charges) £25 at a time0

Great. Have you claimed these back yourself?
Also, it appears that the Alliance & Leicester are difficult to claim from as ive read on other posts.0 -
I'm in the process of trying to claim back charges and have gone through all the paperwork from the bank. Now I understand that I can't claim back a monthly overdraft charge (£8.00) which I presume is levied because I make use of the overdraft facility. But I notice going back a few years that although the usual charge was £8.00, in some months I was charged £20.00. Would this be how the bank penalised me for exceeding the overdraft limit in those days, rather than specifying a seperate charge as they do now, and does that mean I should claim the £12.00 difference?
By the way, did anyone find it really disappointing to find they hadn't been charged anywhere near the amount they thought they remembered? Bang goes the Plasma!0 -
Can I claim back monthly overdraft interest fees as well as penalty fees?
I've gone through my bank statements and the penalty fees alone are nearly £1600!
Thanks0 -
Hi
I thought I would have thousands to be honest, but just finished my letter for £610 (that includes this month!) Mind you, have only had the account for 2 years.
Re: the overdraft interest. I think you are right, the £8 is just for the privilege of having the facility, the £20 is the naughty charge for when you've gone over the limit!0 -
Charges you can claim and those you can't in this thread.
