Tropez - now you're not going to risk your Partner and her ex friends relationship - how about a cheeky submission to the small claims court now for the car costs?
Great idea:) but somehow I don't think Tropez is that sort of a person.

Very well handled and good riddance to her too.

You DD things just right in protecting your partners feelings as much as possible but letting her discover what she needed to know by herself which was definitely for the best.

Sounds like you have a great relationship and are more cool headed than many would have been but staying calm was what was best for your partner so that is what you did and full credit to you for it.

People like her ex best friend will always eventually trip themselves up and show their true colours to all and more often than not jealousy plays a very big part in their actions.

Heh, tempting as it is, it would probably be more hassle than its worth now anyway.

Where is the car parked when this is occuring?

If it is parked in a drive way then could you perhaps install a CCTV system to cover the area in which the car is located? Second hand CCTV systems can be bought fairly cheaply, or some private security firms will lease equipment for a period, although they're usually not cost effective over the short term due to the charges for installing and removing the equipment.

You can also buy in-car devices to detect vandalism but these can be very expensive and very hit and miss. Permanent recording devices can also be subject to privacy laws, unless angled so as to only record those who approach the vehicle but if your perp is primarily slashing tyres there's no guarantee you would catch his face on camera. It is also unfortunately difficult to use permanent recording equipment inside a car anyway due to power requirements and limitations of wireless signals.

As for the police, they will need some evidence on which to act, although if this man is slashing tyres, that means he is carrying a knife. If it is at all possible to capture him on CCTV in the act, then the police can charge him with vandalism and possession of an offensive weapon.

A neighour of mine had a similar problem a couple of years ago, and the police installed a camera in a bedroom, and he had to be sure to park the car in the right spot. We were only told because the camera also covered our front door. It worked and the person was caught and was taken to court and found guilty. This also brought some verbal abuse to an end. I don't know if all authorities have this, but this was in Kent, and I remember they could only have the set up for a imited period.
    Might be worth asking.
