  • Hi there all. I have always had my broadband etc from Orange, right back from the days of Freeserve, including dial up, ISDN ans broadband. However, in December I renewed my agreement to a new 12month contract and moved my phone line to them as well. (phone was Southern Electric) In this change over, they sent me a new Netgear DGN1000 router, which pleased me as I have alsways used Netgear routers and network gear. I duely swapped my old DG834V2 for the new one, and all apeeared to be fine, but, over that past weeks we have fealt that the connection was getting slower and slower.
I tried a few of the online speed test sites which I usually do not like as they are all basically trying to sell you something whether it is a new ISP or some software. All the sites I tried gave both very poor results (mostly under 1 meg) but all also gave wide and sparadic results too!

Whilst we are on an old Coppper line, we are VERY near to the exchange and the line is good for 8mb, which we were getting all the time before.

After the usual MANY phone calls and hours on the line to Orange tech support.... they got me to use BT's Speedtester site which gave the same poor results, and also got me to do a TAP3 test, which again told me there were problems and to contact my ISP! Results from thease tests ranged from 620kbps to 1500kbps. Upstreeam is always 448.

BT Openreach engineer called today and after he tested all of our line settings - voice & Broadband, AND also tesed the internals of the house, we are all baffled....... we set up my new router to the Master Socket which was connected to a laptop via a ethernet cable, and NOTHING else in the house was connected to either the phone line or the router.

We got tte same bad results, and in fact most of the time, the test could not even run. In all cases, regardless of which router I connect and where it's plugged in to we get the same.

If you go into the router settings, it shows that it is connected at 8126kbps download, and 448 upload, but if we try to use our internet for anything other than e-mails or web page browsing, it grinds to a halt! a 2 minute YouTube slip will take about 6 - 8 mins to finish!

Orange are adamant they have NOT throttled back our service, but I simply do not believe them! Nothin else has changed apart from us re-newing our package with them.

The BT site does however say it's a 7.1 line, but my throughput is set to 4500K service!!

HELP............... I want to either get it sorted, or get legal advice on telling Orange to stick thier contract because they have failed to keep up thier side of the contract!!

    Dave.

I have a very similar experience to yourself. I signed up with them approx a month ago, and in that month period i have had orange internet services for approx 3-5 days total. I have been on the phone with them countless times spening approx 3-4 hours in total to date trying to resolve this issue with them.

The service is extremely poor, however they have told me that there is a fault with the line. They are in the process of re-booting the line once again to try and ensure that it SYNCS to the best possible speed, but still i am without any internet services.

In the time i have run various speed tests (when i have had a connection) which have returned download speeds of circa .5MB and upload speeds slightly higher i think.

I am truely fed up with the lack of service that i have recieved.

  • I switched from SKY to Orange broadband because it cost me half the price. Unfortunately it is also half the speed (overnight) and practically non exsistant at peak times.

My BT line gives me a max of 8mb but the same line with a SKY connection managed 20mb with ease and is not restricted ever.

I have an internet ready TV and my daughter regularly streamed films from the pay sites available through the TV, this is now impossible unless I wake her up at 2:00am, the level of restriction makes film streaming impossible.

Luckily I got the broadband for £5 a month as an Orange mobile phone user so it will only cost me £60 to kick this pathetic provider into touch and I can get SKY back with 6 months free as a new customer.

I'll never make the same mistake again, if you use your broadband connection for more that flicking through websites for 10 minutes a day then give Orange a wide berth, you've been warned.

I've also been with Orange since the days of Freeserve, then Wanadoo and never had any issues, downloads always good and no problems with customer service :j......until now.
Had problems with the download speeds dropping down to 100kbps for the last 6 months on and off, made at least 6 calls to tech support in India going over the same things EVERY call (nothing else on the phone line, plugged into the main socket, no phone, cabled to router etc etc) and got given the same answers, my laptop, virus etc. Told them I was going to cancel and got transferred to English customer service team wanting to keep my business! Managed to beat them down to £5 per month as an existing customer but still getting crap service and slow downloads. Same with i-phone so not laptop, can't stream i-player and getting really frustrated. Will happily cancel contract but not sure who's going to give me the line speed I had and the customer service I expect!

Come on Orange, about time you gave your customers some proper answers and helped sort out these problems!

Can anyone recommend a great ISP? Or are they all the same and it's pot luck depending on where you live?
  • In quite similar situation. My package goes all the way back to freeserve days and never had any problems. Now internet browsing is painfully slow and pages take forever to load. Having said that, my download speeds are not that bad so not sure what can I do to improve it.

So I contacted Orange tell complain about the service and requested a MAC code. They of course attempted to stop me leaving by offering to speed up the line. I explained that they promised 17mbp download speeds and that unlimited broadband is pointless when they practically stop your download speed at peak time (the reason it's PEAK time is because that's when we need it most!!!!!!!!!!!!).
They then unbelievably explained that they accidently put me on a lower service and offered to speed up the line to the promised 17mbp, I declined on the basis Orange is crap.
The facts are simple, Orange offer a service that I was getting 12yrs ago with AOL, they have a seriously outdated service. It was worth the £60 just to get rid.
I've re joined SKY and within 3 days I'm bouncing 19mbp download speeds for fun AT ALL TIMES OF THE DAY! And they gave me 6 months free broadband and anytime phone so I've actually saved money and increased my broadband....HAPPY DAYS :)

I have also noticed my Orange BB has got a lot worse over the last few weeks or so. Grinding to a practical standstill one day and performing normaly the next. Their Help line is un helpful with no solutions found so far. I keep hoping that it will fix itself out. Am I being optimistic lol
  • I'm have the same slow speed with orange after being with them for years and have not had that many problems with them I have now starting to have problems with the live box losing connection and my speed is about 1mb all the time.

I cannot watch iplayer, ITV player etc on it
youtube videos take forever to load etc.
and my brother is always going on about his PS3 connection

To top it all off orange sales phoned me in the week to ask me do I want to sign up to have my land line with them so I said funny you called me because I want to cancel.

That's it now i'm going to SKY does any one know how long I would be without the internet for when my broadband switches over to sky.

    Thanks

Should only be a couple of hours, however if you are on LLU you have to return to donar (BT) before you can move to Sky or anyone else.
