  • Just go for the cheapest Miele dishwasher which cleans just as well as the more expensive models but comes without the bells and whistles.
The G1022 can be bought for £467 after discount:

kwatt, you say SMEG are overpriced, but for the price I've seen with a 5 yr warranty on offer till end of June, are they as reliable as Bosch or Miele?

    In a word - NO

SMEG are no longer a premium appliance manufacturer, in fact a lot of their sales in the UK are now through housing developers or contract kitchens (I know this, as it's what I used to do and it got to the point where I stopped dealing with SMEG, due to the poor quality.)

The German appliance brands are well worth paying a little extra for. Would I expect a Bosch appliance to last for ten years? Absolutely, in fact, if it didn't last for 15 years, I'd be very disappointed. If you can afford a Miele, then go for it, but if you want to save a little, Bosch or Siemens are well worth it.

There will however always be the scenario where ANY appliance by ANY manufacturer will break down sooner than expected. (A couple of years ago, a £17k range cooker that I sold broke down after 18 months use, due to a faulty gas safety cut off). So it's not just how reliable the "brand" is, it's how they resolve any issues that you have.

I have always found the German brands to offer a much higher level of after-sales service than any of the other brands.

I'd broadly agree with that about Smeg, a case of style over substance in many cases.

The German brands I'm not so sure about as many of the mainstream products aren't that much better now as they too are being built to a price in order to compete in the mass market. I do think the Germans are very good at making out that they're better, because they're German. Just how that makes them better is never quite made clear.

But absolutely spot on, any machine can and will break at some point, it's only a matter of when and whether it can be fixed, how quickly and at what cost.

  • Cyco, thank you, a very good, direct and informative post,

At mo, my leaning is to Bosch, I could get ten years, and could get some spares I could fit myself, like a seal, after a 5yr warranty, at about £190 cheaper than Miele.

Washing machine is a washer/dryer that is sept 2005 vintage, on a Hotpoint service plan as well, has broke down, but not like the the dishwasher, that will be the next to look at.
Workmate has a Bosch washer that he likes.

Majority of probs we've had with both have been electronic, not plumbing/water related, to me, this says something about Hotpoint's choice of electronic components.

I'm sorry, but I really have to disagree. The German manufacturers are a lot more concerned about style, functionality and reliablility than the price point. A £500 oven from Neff for example, will be lower spec than a £500 oven from Hotpoint, but it is better built and uses higher quality components. You also find that if you have a problem with a German appliance, it's generally resolved a lot quicker than an appliance made elsewhere and usually with less fuss.

I have an AEG, I gave up on the Whirpool dishwasher I got with the kitchen when it packed up continually just after the one years guarantee ran out.

Have a look at John Lewis' own brand goods. I believe they are also AEG or Bosch.

  • Agree all things are built to a price, you can buy a SIM free iPhone for £600, but what size TV could you buy for that?
Rule of thumb seems to be, charge the market price you can get away with?

But it all depends on what quality of parts and manufacture you put in for that price, I've said Miele are about £190 more expensive than similar Bosch, But, do Miele put in that much more quality in parts and manufacture?
Bosch, being a bigger company, should be able to lower costs with economy's of scale, they are said to manufacture several different brands in the same factory.

I'm happy to help (I just wish I could find a way to earn some commission lol)

The washing machine is the only appliance where I would say - If you can afford it, get a Miele. They really do make the best washing machines by a LONG way. I know they are more expensive, but if you look at the extra cost over 15 years (which I would definitely expect it to last) they aren't THAT much more expensive.

Couldn't agree more. Don't forget Siemens are a MASSIVE player in the Electronic engineering market. (Much more so than the appliance market) and they put their experience in the EE field to good use!

Most Bosch and Siemens products are made in the same factories, but to different specifications and use different components.

The only other appliance brands they manufacture out of their factores are Neff and Gaggenau, and that is only their dishwashers.

Both Neff and Gaggenau have their own factories for the other appliances.
