Have a look at John Lewis' own brand goods. I believe they are also AEG or Bosch.

Electrolux Group product except the DishDrawer which is F&P so far as I am aware. Service is by Electrolux's Service Force.

CyCo, that's okay I know a lot of the guys like the German stuff I just don't think it's all it's cracked up to be these days and certainly not what it was 20 years ago. IMO they're just playing the same volume games as everyone else now, whack 'em out en masse as cheaply as they can and, BSH have allegedly been dumping stock to shore up production, so I'm told.

On a washing machine, you're forgetting the Asko built ISE machines, easily as good as a Miele although there aren't a plethora of models to choose from.

A dishwasher tends not to get the same level of punishment though as a washer does.

I have an AEG, I gave up on the Whirpool dishwasher I got with the kitchen when it packed up continually just after the one years guarantee ran out.

Good point about John Lewis's brand, I'll check that out,
Brand quality can change with a takeover, long time ago, we had an AEG washer, after knowing one that lasted ten years, ours lasted just over three years till the drum bearings failed noisly during a spin one Saturday evening when watching a favourite tv show, never moved so fast to reach the off button,
AEG had def changed, but except for merging with Siemens, Bosch are the same.
  • Just checked, cheapest John Lewis dishwasher I can see us about £40 more expensive than what I can get a Bosch for.

AEG is now owned by the Electrolux Group, full-ish history here but basically you now get a Zanussi/Electrolux with a few bells and whistles and some cosmetic changes. Completely different to what many people think AEG actually is.

Was trying to say that Bosch had not had a take over, which had resulted in their quality going down, Like AEG,

    Siemens may have improved Bosch?

That was completely true, until their latest range review.

Since they switched to dual branding (AEG-Electrolux), AEGs market share has dropped massively, especially in the independent kitchen market, where they were historically marketed, as the Electrolux association devalued the brand and the products were not made to the same standards they used to be.

The recent range overhaul in March has seen them go back to single branding, so they are now truely AEG products again. This coincided with the majority of production being taken back to Germany (As far as I am aware, dishwashers are the only items not being made in Germany now), as well as a portfolio of appliances aimed to claw back some of the market share from BSH and Miele. Expect a massive jump in quality (back to where they use to be) and a different strategy: a fair few appliances are now ONLY available from kitchen showrooms, to prevent internet "warehouses" bulk-buying and again devaluing the product.

    Ah ok :)

Have they improved them? In some ways yes! As they both share R&D costs and information, it enables them to opperate more efficiently and produce higher quality appliances. However, ALL Bosch appliances are made to a lower spec. than Siemens and this has always been the case. Their initial strategy was to take as great a market share as possible. Therefore having two brands, producing the same spec. appliances would mean they were limiting the market share they could achieve and leave sections of the market for other comapnies to get a decent market share.

Whilst there are some cross-overs, but generally Siemens are aimed at the middle to top end of the appliance market (Style AND functionality), where as Bosch are focused on the lower to middle sections (functionality over style). Neff used to be aimed at the top end of the markplace only, but recently it has had to start taking some of the middle ground to keep up the sales. (In fact, currently Siemens products are more top end than Neff; Neff really need to pull their finger out and decide where they want to be)

Gaggenau is a completely different monster and is aimed right at the top end (specialist market)

    Hope that makes sense?

    Hi CyCo,

No, I just looked up a washing machine yesterday for a guy in the EU who wanted to remove for protective plastic from the fascia and it was a Zanussi tank in it and it was marked as production in Italy. That was a brand new model from 2011.

As for moving back to Germany, they shut that plant years ago and sold it so I don't know how Lux could move back there. I wasn't aware of much production at all in Germany these days, even BSH only produce a handful of lines there now most of them come from the Balay plant in Spain, I think some in Portugal, Poland and China.

Miele, to my knowledge, are the only ones that make the bulk of what they produce in Germany now and I've even seen a dryer or two marked as Made In Poland from them now as well.
