How can I ensure my stepsons don't get a penny from my will?

I think as soon as second marriages are entered into.. there are always going to be odd problems arising. I wish I'd married someone without children now.

I also wish I'd met the children before I got married. I told my husband two days ago, that had I met his sons before marriage and realised that one of them would be living with us, I'd not have married him. He said, "I know".

Yes, problems indeed! I don't wish my oh didn't have children though, as I do love my stepdaughter, and care for my stepson, despite the way he's treated my oh and I. I decided quite a while ago that I would draw a line under the money we spent for him. He kept saying he was going to pay it back and would periodically ask for my bank details, but not a penny ever transpired, even when he had a good job. I knew I had to give up on getting it back so just decided to see it as a gift, for the sake of my own sanity as well as for the good of the family. He recently spent a few days visiting and I can honestly say I enjoyed him being here. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, your stepson doesn't seem to want to build bridges with you, which I'm sure makes it really difficult. I bet you'd be more willing to relate to him if he made an effort with you. There was a period of about 2 years when I had hardly any contact with my stepson, and he didn't even acknowledge when we had our second child, which hurt.

I guess I was more fortunate than you in that I knew the children long before we got married, and one of them had already lived with us. I watched them grow from young teens into adults and knew about their difficult early lives, so was able to empathise with them.

I think you may be right in thinking that your dh kept his family from you as he knew you would have second thoughts about marrying him. I wish you all the best and hope things work out as you would like.

  • Totally agree. I wonder if its my stepson posting.

My stepsons are the type who want to live the high life on someone else's money. Their dad can't give them the life they crave, so they have their eyes on the step mother.

They wont see a penny of my money. Over my dead body.

    oh for gods sake.....childish much????

This is a very long post and I've no idea how this has changed from the original post but as a step mum I know that I would not want any of my money going to my step children. My money will go to the children that I one day hope to have with my husband.

My husband and his ex can make provisions in their wills but I will most certainly not be leaving any money to them.

Thank you. I appreciate your contribution.

The good news is, step sons can not challenge our wills. Which is something i've learnt since the start of this thread.

Regarding the vasectomy thing - I believe lies about infertility are grounds for an annulment.
