Expensive but pretty good - when I lived in a flat it really made a difference to whether or not there was a catty smell when I opened the door. Also very easy to clean the tray and didn't seem to be tracked a great deal.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

  • Just came across this thread & wondered if any of you have seen or used Smart Cat Wood Pellet Litter from Asda? It's £2.81 for 10 litres but it's the best we've come across (apart from tesco value of course). We have 7 cats (3 of which are kittens) because we are such softies when it comes to homeless cats. We adopted one thats owners did not get her fixed & so we got stuck with kittens!

We were trying to find something that would last longer & not fill our bin up. This stuff so far is fantastic! We use one bag between 2 cat boxes & it lasts about 4/5 days. It slowly turns into sawdust which can be messy but even after 5 days it still didn't have any strong odour apart from wood! Just something to try :)

Yup, I've started using this since the PAH wood litter changed (apparently they've had loads of complaints)..... and find it really good too.

I to "scoop" a couple of times a day (as you would for a clumping litter) to remove solids and the worst of the sawdust.

Wow. I wish I "scooped" only a couple of times a day. My Bengal kittens are sooooooo fussy that I have to scoop after every number 2 done by them and Friday (Harry and Robbie normally go out to do theirs), plus I scoop all the number 1s regularly (inc. Robbie's as he will do these in the litter tray) - I reckon I'm a 5 or 6 times a day scooper  And that is of 2 large trays and 1 small tray, though not all are used every time. :T

Back to the subject of the thread, I used to be a Sainbury's Ultra Clumping girl but in the last month or so have gone over to OKO plus. It does seem quite expensive when you first pay out for it, but I have found that it lasts so much longer than other litters I've bought, that it works out to be good value in the end.

I reckon in the last month or so, I've used around 20 litres of the stuff (a 5L trial size and about half a 30L size I bought from Pet Supermarket). A 20L size costs £14.49 on Zooplus. For 5 cats and 3 trays in a month? I think that's pretty reasonable.

  • Hi everyone

We recently adopted a kitten and as it had been years since I had a cat, I turned to MSE for some advice on what cat litter to get. With so many brands and types it's very confusing! So far we've tried 1. Smart wood based litter from Asda, 2. layers pellets and 3. Yesterday's News which is made from old newspapers. Tracking has seemed to occur with all three types, I'm starting to think it might just be part of having a cat, and now I'm considering buying a tracking mat.

    Here's my verdict so far:
    1. This litter smelled nice, like wood, but I found it a bit awkward to clean out as it turns to sawdust when it gets wet. My kitten (now 5 months old) did not seem to like standing in it and didn't cover his number 2's.
    2. Layers pellets have been the best so far. While they smelled slightly more like cat, there was no strong smell that you sometimes get when you walk into a house with pets. Wet pellets clumped together and little Simon (the cat) was happy to cover up his business.
    3. Yesterday's News makes a lot of claims about absorption, but my kitten does not seem to like the feel of the large pellets under his feet. He covered his number 2 for the first time today after using this brand for over a week. The pellets expand when wet, and in theory it's supposed to make it easy to sieve the wet pellets out, but I've spent a lot more time scooping with this litter than with the other types.

I came across a few threads that spoke about using chick crumb as litter. Like layers pellets, this is a type of chicken feed, and apparently the texture is like World's Best. I took the plunge and bought a 20kg bag for £13.88 including delivery to Liverpool from Healthy Pets. They seem to be based in the North East and do free local delivery, but were still cheaper than anywhere else that I could find on Sunday. I'm hoping that the chick crumbs work out, definitely a cheap option.

I'll keep y'all posted. I really would prefer to use something that could be flushed as I live in a flat and Simon is an indoor kitty, which is why I haven't used clay-based litters.

Golden Grey seems good, might try that if the chick crumbs don't work.
Wins: Stairgate worth £27.99 and ViewSonic Monitor worth £129 = £156.99/2015, hoping to win a car! ;)

I really loved this cat litter (apart from the sawdust mess) but sadly our eldest male cat did not! He decided it was only good to pee on for about 2 days & then used our wall instead (right by the front door). So it's back to the good old tesco value cat litter & one more cat box. We are on day 3 and so far so good. I'll be so happy if we can make it to 5 days without having to clean them all yet but with 7 cats anything can happen :p

Cats Best Oko Gold definitely, Zoo Plus did sell a really good one that we used years ago called Extreme Classic that actually did cover any odour and had fantastic clumping, but I got absolutely sick of the stuff when we had to move to a one bedroom flat and keep the litter box in the bathroom. The cats would kick the litter out onto the floor and then it would turn into glue if there was any water from having a shower.

There are more than a few people on a cat forum that I post on that just go to farm suppliers and get chicken crumble and use that for litter because it is a lot cheaper.
It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.

  • I have 4 cats-soon to be 6-and I used to use whatever litter was cheapest.

Now I use ripped up paper and cardboard and line the trays with newspaper. It's cheap (mostly free as I get free papers, use junk mail and ask family to keep old newpapers for me) and it is eco friendly. I use bob Martin or glade litter sprinkles to get rid of oders. It's not the quickest way and it needs changing once or twice a day ,but it saves money and my cats are happy enough with it :-)
