For those who find this thread since its been linked in the latest email - id just like to leave this link here:

The article may be 10 years old but can you all read the above article and PLEASE consider the environmental damage you are causing by using the bentonite clay based litter that is usually the common variety found in supermarkets as their value brand.

I have two indoor cats, and I use Breedercelect recycled paper based litter and biodegradable bags when I'm getting rid of it; meaning its going to break down WAY quicker and part could be composted if you felt so inclined (i hasten to add - not the solids!!!). A 30l big bag is approx £13 and that lasts well over a month with two cats and two trays. There are corn based versions etc available at pet stores and paper based ones are available easily at places like the range.

I suspect the amount of landfill we create from litter in a year is easily as bad as the amount of disposable nappies and we really can do better so easily.

  • I have been usinga Brit-Pet sieving litter tray system for about 6 months. I buy Verdo wood pellets costing about £5.20 for 15kg. A bag lasts about 3 months. We have 2 indoor cats using it. It is excellent at odour control, economical and does not create lots of dust or litter trails outside of the tray.
Cannot post a link but try an internet search.
  • If you have a Range near you I have found their wood pellet bio at £8 for large sack is the best. CatSan is expensive I found when you have a cat that does not go out. Best of luck.
  • We use the wood pellets from B&N, I think it’s called pet shop natural cat litter. Its as good if not better than the one you get in Pets at Home but is much cheaper. I wouldn’t use anything else now.

just as an aside, if you can wean your cat off milk, that helps with the 'smell' as cats digestive systems are not good at dealing with cows milk.

We use Tesco’s Clumping Cat Litter £4.20 for our 3 cats. They have two large litter boxes (with lids).

Husband used to deal with the single large box when we had one cat. That changed when I realised he was only changing the litter once each week. He was not clearing any deposits in between. This upset me hugely as cats are very clean.

I clear one litter box 2-3 times daily. Husband does the other box each evening. A bag of litter will last 2-3 weeks per litter box.

Moral of story: clear litter box at least twice each day; your cat will be very pleased AND you’ll buy less litter😻😻😻
  • Hello, Nina the Cat here (I'm afraid that Tulip the Cat went to the big cat basket in the sky a few years ago). My Mummy buys my cat litter from Lidl at £1.89 for 10kg. She likes it because it clumps nicely. I like it because I can get in my litter tray and pretend I'm digging to Australia.

Hi I changed almost 18 minths ago to a BritPet sieving litter tray. Every 3 months I buy a sack of Verdo horse bedding wood pellets for about £5.50. Our 2 cats are happy sharing a large tray. I flush solids down the loo at least once a day. The tray was not cheap but it it amazing how cheap it is to run. The cats adapted without any problem and it deals with smells better than my old traditional litter did.
  • I mainly shop at Tesco and always used their value cat litter as I have 15 rescue cats. However, I'm always on the look-out for online bargains so thought I'd try some of the incredibly large bags of pellets from Pets at Home. It's much better value, believe it or not. I do put newspaper in the bottom of the trays too for easier emptying on the days I don't wash them out. Also, if you go through one of those cashback sites such as Top Cashback you can save even more money. Sanicat is regularly on offer and is also fab. Look on Zooplus, Pet Planet and MonsterPet too. They all do cashback for first orders and a smaller amount for consequent orders.
