Best cheap cat litter?

Yay new kitties! We need pics jellybox.
I have 2 cats and only have one litter box, I know you're meant to have one per cat but they really don't seem to care.
I find oko plus the best, it's not quite as easy to fling as the more gravelly type ones. The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0 -
HI
what about a litter tray with a lid? They will still track it on their paws but any playing should be contained in the tray.
I use Costco litter. It is the gravelly sort but its good at clumping and disguising smells. The Cabbage

No pics I'm afraid, but rest assured they are beautiful. I don't think I can get into a costco, and am just trying to figure out if I should change both litter and tray, or just one or the other? Smell wise, I think we're ok, as I've got them indoor cat food, which has massively reduced the smell, plus they only go first thing in the morning, so I am ready to get it immediately after the event!0

We have Wilkinsons clumping litter, it costs £2.99 for a 10 litre bag and its very good. Just 1 of my cats uses the tray and he has 1 tray out during the day and 2 at night.
During the day if he has a wee or two the litter clumps together and you can just remove that bit. If he has a number 2 I remove it straight away. The litter and the trays do not smell generally apart from 1 st thing before they are cleaned.
I dont have to change all the litter only the wet bits and I disinfect the trays every couple of days. I also put the trays on newspapers.
I find this better than the previous litter where i had to do a complete litter change everyday and it smelled. I previously used Asdas cheapest litter. My cat just uses standard litter trays.
Good luck withit all.0 -
I've tried reading the whole thread, but am a bit baffled so require the help of you litter experts! We've just adopted two beautiful kittens, they came with two bags of tesco value litter, which they are currently throwing all over the floor, along with the contents of the tray! I'm not too fussed about tracking, as there will soon be a mat out to stop this, but is there a good litter/tray combination that will help with their overexcited burying? Also, I suspect I'm being a little over zealous with the cleaning, how long can these things be left? Additional (and finally) they came with two trays, but only really use one, the other seems to just be for 'fun' digging, so could I be rid of this second one?
I mix 1/2 woodchip - any supermarket brand will do (litter not food) with 50% clumping - Biokats microfresh - online - think it was Petsupermarket but could have been zooplus - Pets at home No5 clumping is also good but not as cheap (I bought 2 massive bags online together for discount).
I thought I understood cat litter, but all this thread has done is prove I know nothing!
When they are little there is obviously less of the stuff! When they are grown there will be more. I have 2 trays for my two so they don't have to wait for the other to have finished. I have covered trays with flaps to keep the litter inside the box & sights & smells too.
I find the better quality the food the less volume & smells in the litterbox - most supermarket petfood is below par & kitten food an uncessary luxury. Choose food wisely & face less doings afterwards - wet & solids!
Cheap litter however is false economy & much more time spent cleaning.0 -
I use wood pellets that are primarily made for burning on stoves etc...

Far cheaper than the wood pellet cat litter sold but a lot cheaper & better!
They don't really track & if they do you can easily see them so don't end up with little bits of grit stuck to your bare feet!
It lasts for AGES as you just scoop out the used bits...The odour is low and you don't get the ammonia smell like you do with gritThe litter tray is real easy to empty & clean as it doesn't have mushy grey sludge stuck to the bottom!
My sister has seven HUGE Maine Coons - all house cats - so she gets through LOTS of litter...We club together along with my niece to buy half a pallet at a time but it can be purchased in smaller amounts too!
:heartpuls Gains & £'s saved..Far too many to mention! Needless to say I LOVE MSE! :heartpuls

I've used wood pellet litter for years with no problems, until taking on a stray last October. He's about a year old, neutered, he doesn't spray, but does often wet in inappropriate places (DD's bed, all the dog beds, an armchair, on paper next to the litter tray...). He does use the wood pellet tray as well, and the litter just doesn't contain the incredibly strong smell from his urine.
I got two bags of Golden Grey a few weeks ago and the only cat that will use it is my 13 year old neutered male, who has NEVER used any litter tray until now! The others, spayed females aged 13 and nearly 3, hate it. Last week I got Oko and both girls prefer it, though it tracks through the entire house.
Now I have five trays - one upstairs and one down with Golden Grey, one up and one down with Oko, and one with wood pellets, which is the only one the smelly new boy will use.
His puddles are huge and the wood pellets are certainly the least economical as I'm changing half the tray daily. Bagging and binning the contents of the clumping litter trays makes for a stinky bin but the trays themselves don't smell the way soggy wood pellets do. I have extra large trays and the litter is deep enough so the wet has clumped before touching the bottom of the tray - better also for the old girl who always has loose bowels. I wondered about Worlds Best, but is that a very fine litter like Golden Grey? I may yet end up with cheap clumping litter in all the trays and hope the new lad will tolerate it. I'm sure his toilet habits will have been the reason he was kicked of his last home. We'll get there, lucky I rarely have visitors.0 -
wohoooooooooooooooooo - ordered to test
another brilliant version of Golden Grey but this one is lovely white with silicone granules
1st day in the trays - clumps really well, no smell whatsoever, just the scent of what is supposed to be lavender (I hate lavender) but to me it does not smell of lavender so very happy

Does it track at all/a lot?I have a simple philosophy:
Fill what's empty. Empty what's full. Scratch where it itches.
