Woolwich Bank Charges (merged)

  • I have an old Woolwich current account still open but unused, which has now changed to a Barclays current account.

I must have had a lot of bank charges applied to the Woolwich account over the years (more than 10). Now that it has changed to Barclays, I dont suppose there's any chance of claiming those charges back?

    Does anybody know?

I realise that the whole claiming back of charges is at the high court at the moment, but would it be worth my while pursuing this?

  • HELP!.....I'm an old Woolwich customer, who were taken over by Barclays. I was unhappy with the service that Barclays were providing me so I have opened another account with a different building society. My question is, who do I contact to obtain the last six years worth of charges? Woolwich or Barclays....does the Woolwich even still exist? Thanks in advance for any help or guidance given.
  • Hi

I have been doing this since November 2006 with Barclays (on my old Woolwich current A/C) in the sum of 7516.24 - (made up of 6,728.00 charges since 2000 plus 538.24 int @ 8% plus 250.00 court fee). They wrote to me in Jan 06 offering me 1,000 and I refused it so they offered me 2,000, again I refused that and sent a scathing letter back to them telling them exactly what I thoguth of them.

I was one of the lucky few to attend Southend County Court in for my hearing in July 07 and be advised of the stay on proceedings til 4 Dec - what I need to know is, if my account is 2,500 overdrawn by Barclays making it that overdrawn with these charges PLUS getting Wescot Credit after me, PLUS entering on my Experian record that I 'owe Barclays 2,500' can this be used in court against Barclays *When* we finally get to court?

Considering they took off me my card via ATM when I did a balance enquiry and handed my a/c to a bunch of bullying cowboys, they cannot repay my charges to me via my a/c can they as its now defunct?

As I haven't had a judgement made against me in court for the 2,500 that I 'owe' Barclays, can I get the entry removed from my credit report?

Can anyone shed any light on this for me please? Its been nearly a year I have been fighting this battle and I am sick to the back teeth of it - just want the money back now and have done with it - any help/tips/advice/do's/dont's would be very gratefully received... I did post a message asking for help/advice in Dec 06 but as yet cannot see a reply to it...
    :(:(:(

    Thanks guys

  • I put in a claim with Barclays for our former Woolwich account for £936 earlier this year and Barclays replied and offered me the option to await the outcome of the OFT or accept a settlement of £626 within 2 months of the date of their leter (dated 10 August).

After some time of deliberation I decided to opt for the settlement and wrote back to Barclays on the 17 September accepting their offer.

On 4 October I wrote another letter saying that as I had not heard anything from them and would appreciate a response. (NOTE: As far as I can remember/glean info from the web the postal strike was on 5,6, & 9th October)

On 10 October I received a letter from Barclays dated 4 October. The letter acknoledged receipt of my letter dated 17 September and.. 'I regret I am unable to process your request without the original acceptance form'. On 10 October, I phoned Barclays and explained there was no 'form' with their letter and 'she' said there was no problem, as soon as I returned the form 'signed' they could process my claim. I signed the form that day and posted it.

Some time following posting the form I phoned Barclays at leaset twice to ask when I could expect to have the money paid into my account - I was told they had received my acknowlegement and the money would be in my account in around 2 weeks.

Then this week I received a letter dated 12 November 'We have received your acceptance form relating to the goodwill offer previously made to you. We are unable to process your acceptance as it is only signed by one party to the account. Regrettably the bank's offer has now expired and can no longer be accepted.'

(The account is in joint names) I checked my photocopy of the form and it clearly asks for only my details:
Full Name: Mrs S## V### Date:.... Signature:..., etc.

I phoned Barclays again (very upset) And was basically told that wa that, I now have to wait for the OFT outcome, and that I had signed the form on 15 October (correct, but it was signed on the day i had received the letter and posted straight back, no allowance for the postal strike is accepted!)

    Any comments?! :o
  • I dont have much knowledge of dealing with acceptance letters but i would get in touch with the ombudsman and make a complaint i dont know if anybody on here has anyother thoughts on this

  • My account was transferred from the Woolwich to Barclays approx six months ago due to a Barclays takeover of Woolwich.

Can I claim back any charges paid over the last six years to the Woolwich, from Barclays? I am assuming that Barclays have taken on ownership of the account and therefore liability for it - is this correct?
  • Yes, if you hang on I'll put your post into the Woolwich thread which gives you the different addresses to use.
