Hi all
On 9 Jan 2007 I sent a letter to the woolwich outlining my charges for 2005-2006 and politely requesting that they be paid back. (template letter from this site)
I got a reply, but not quite what I asked for. They have sent me a schedule of charges from when I first opened the account in 2004. In their words: "as requested please find enclosed details of all charges that have been applied to your account" So in that way, I got the list of charges for free even though it was not what I asked for!
It now turns out that I have been charged seven hundred pound more than I was claiming, and I have worked out what the interest on that is using the calculator,
My question is this, shall I start over by sending letter 1 claiming the new amount, or shall I go straight to step 2, writing the more firmly worded letter which threatens court action should a satisfactory conclusion not be reached?
Any advice gratefully pounced upon!

Hi,
I began claiming my charges back from The Woolwich on 16/12/06. At each level they have always sent me the standard letter (i.e. thank you for taking the time to express your dis-satisfaction etc etc ... blah blah blah ... waffle, waffle, waffle ...), and each time I have sent them a letter with a clear and reasonable deadline on, they extend it a just a little bit and push me to the limits! Typical bank eh?!!!
Well, I wrote to them 14 days ago asking for them to pay me back my £2559.00, and they again sent me a standard letter telling me that they would aim to have a reply to me by 22/2/07 - some 15 days after my deadline expires!!!
I am now at the point where I am thoroughly sick to death of being passed from pillar to post, I've had letters from four different people in different departments, and I am today sending them the letter telling them that unless they pay me back my money within 7 days, I am instigating court action.
As I do not know who is overall responsible, I am sending the letter to the last contact I have had a letter from, by special delivery. This way, they cannot deny receiving it!
I cannot believe how poor they are, and how much of a paper chain is involved in all of their operations. Why is it that these banks feel they are a step above all of this, and when they lump the charges on us, they have no hesitation in doing so, on the date they set, yet when we ask for a reply, they simpy cannot get their acts together!
They make my blood boil!!!
Anyway, wish me luck, as today I am getting mean with them (!), and although it's kind of scary, I feel I have given them fair enough chance now to get their act together!
For information, each time I have written, I have written to The Woolwich Openplan Customer Contact Centre, Jackson House, Jackson Road, Claton-on-Sea, Essex. CO15 1WH.
I have seen this address crop up a couple of times now on various threads(although initally my letters came from Barclays, it now seems they have passed the details back to the Woolwich ...)
Also, since I wrote to them asking for my money back, they have put more charges onto my acccount. I stopped all diredct edbits etc with them to avoid this, but their charges for January put me overdrawn, and they have now charged me £93.00 for the privilege of being overdrawn.
So, I am assuming that I should sent them a revised list of charges etc with the new total on this time?
Also, I have now opened a basic account with the Co-Operative Bank, and had a call yesterday to say that all my details and cheque book / Electron card etc were being sent out in the next couple of days (just in case Woolwich get funny) ...
Good luck to anybody else who is trying to un-ravel The Woolwich's paper chain ... it's so infuriating ...0 -
Hi all,
I was on the phone today to the Woolwich cancelling a Direct Debit, and the nice man said 'is there anything else I can do for you today?' So I thought I'd see what they were saying about asking for a list of charges...
Well, he said it shouldn't be a problem, how far back did I want to go? Not wanting to let on I knew what I was talking about, I asked 'how far back CAN you go'? and he said 6 years!sounds like he knows his stuff. In for a penny, I thought and asked him how I'd go about organising that, expecting to be told to write in - but he said 'I'll just check for you', then came back after a couple of minutes and told me 'That's all been organised, you'll receive a letter confirming the request in 2 working days, and the information will follow!
Not quite believing my luck, I asked if there was a charge, and he said 'no, no charge at all'
So I'll let you know if I get anything in the post next week - I won't hold my breath though, just in case!
WebDigital TV, Broadband & Phone requirements - around £50 pm saved !
Don't let them Estimate! Gave Powergen a 'real reading' & got £122.16 back that I'd overpaid!
Mortgage Exit fee - £100 received from the Halifax - for just a phone call!
Woolwich - received £3,845 refund of bank charges0 -
I'm claiming £450 from the Woolwich which was an arrangement fee for a mortgage which they declined. I actually got a phone call this morning telling me that because they didnt make any error on their part the fee was valid. I asked the lady to send me it in writing as I'm starting court proceedings.. I'm calling the Sheriff Clerk's office this afternoon to have the paperwork sent out.. I'll keep you posted on how I get on... wish me luck!

As this isn't a charges claim rather a bank error I would suggest you go through the Financial Ombudsman rather than rely on the bank charges route of taking the Woolwich to court siting excess charges.0 -
Hi again,
Well, I got a letter from the Woolwich today in response to my phone request (see post #34)
but it sounds like the 'Standard Response Letter' mentioned by catuk & edinburghlass (posts#27 & #28)
So I'm going to sit tight for a while & see if a list of charges shows up in the post, as I'm sure I'd get the same response as catuk if I called them.
Update when it happens (i.e when they send me the list of charges, or I get fed up of waiting!)
