Thought I'd better update this, as I've just had a response back from LoveFilm. I queried this email, and they've come back and said this was an error. It seems I initially used a different promotional code, but didn't complete the registration, so the system flagged it as ineligible. They've said they'll follow it up and I'll get the voucher.
So not as bad customer service as I'd initially thought.
The first email came from an Indian name, and the second, more helpful one was from someone called Susan. My distrust of customer services outsourced to India makes me think my response was sent back to the UK to be dealt with, which is why the second email from customer services was more helpful.
I'm not against continuing past the free trial period if the service is good, but judging by some comments on this board maybe not!0 -

I would love to join another one but lovefilm seems to have taken over them all and they dont seem to be good at the moment.
Has Bilbo had a look at Amazon????????
I doubt if that's run by Lovefilm.0 -

I signed up and waited 6 days before giving up. I registered with a perfectly valid Credit card, waited, waited and waited, after 6 days the account hadn't been activated and yet the 21 day trial had been ticking away since I registered. WATCH THE CALENDAR!!!!!

Cancel my account
To confirm your cancellation please call us on 0870 609 5384.
I just wanted to put my experience to reassure some people and balance the argument a little.
I called Lovefilm up today and got through in under 5 minutes. LoveFilm wanted to know why I was cancelling and I said that I dont have time to watch the films so they took that as a avalid reason. I was told I needed to return the outstanding dvd's I had within the free trial period and will do so by recorded delivery. I checked my membership and it had been set to "cancellation pending". I also checked my bank account and they havent debited any money- unlike some people on the boards. However I am still worried that the have pre-authorised 3 months membership off my bank account but I couldnt see this on the statement so its probably behind the scences.
Fingers crossed as I am still nervous about this and the boots voucher.0 -
I signed up last night using the link providing on this website and it only gave 14 days, and didnt mentioned the boots voucher. which isnt any better than going direct to lovefilm.com0

Just to echo syd's quest for balance, yup, we've really no serious complaints about Lovefilm service to date. Our 2nd DVD arrived yesterday, in excellent condition. Still can't get used to the online account screen so -- guess we're still missing Amazon.
Worse though is the realisatioin that actually, there aren't enough movies on DVD that we actually want to see anyway -- took me an hour to struggle to make 20 in the account list.
So what with that and the fact (as someone else mentioned here) it's a bind having to queue at the Post office to pay for Signed For delivery -- not Lovefilm's fault, but then again, I'm not risking £20 on a lost DVD -- we're going to give up on DVDs-by-post altogether.0 -

Oh no, this is all going wrong for me.
I registered for the free trial, i got 3 weeks. if i want to close it i have to do that by the 31st December.
I got my first DVD on Saturday (2nd Dec) really quick, (it was an old title) and returned it on monday in their pre paid envelope.
Today (Friday 8th) they still haven't recieved it back. I reported it as a problem, and the auto response said they will be sending me a form V19 (I think) which could take up to 10 days to arrive. I will then have to comply with their lost disk procedure or face a £20 fine.
I expect if this gets sorted out it will be too late to cancel in the trial period, (which will cost me £9.99) and i expect to be charged £20 because i didn't get proof of postage.
I just thought the idea of dvd rental via the post, with pre paid envelopes was convienience. I didn't think to go to ge proof of posting. The first time i saw mention of 'proof of posting' was in the help section of the site, as a good thing to do for the last dvd before cancelling the account.
I really hope that i don't get automatically charged the £20 because i can't sufficiently prove that i've posted the dvd.
I'm even wondering if they're purposely not checking it in so that it delays the process, (with this v19 form) and i have to pay the first months subscription, reading some posts have made me paranoid perhaps...
I knew it was a risk to try an offer like this, but I've been getting the e-mails for so long, and this is the first thing i've tried (i'm always short of OTC medicins and toiletries and £15 for free seemed hard to pass up). But i'm on benefits and i couldn't really afford to take the risk. and with xmas around the corner, even £9.99 makes a huge difference.
